LAST MONTH’S SURVEY & CONTEST RESULTS
The last month we went to press (July) there was no survey. ;-( (sorry)
Q and A:
Q: Do pheromones have a smell? I thought they were scentless.
A: In order to be considered a pheromone a substance must be able to have some effect on our behaviour without being consciously perceived by the nose, or in simpler terms it must be able to do its work without having a smell in the normal sense of the word. All that said though, some pheromones do have a very noticeable smell, which most but not all people can detect. Actually, that is yet another amazing thing about pheromones, how differently they are consciously detected from one person to the next. For example, the testosterone-linked pheromone androstenone can be detected consciously by only 75% of US males. The other 25% of the male population smell nothing. Women on the other hand are much more likely to detect a smell when exposed to androstenone.
To those who can detect the smell of androstenone, the smell is often overwhelming. Some other pheromones, like androsteRONE have a very mild musky smell and still others like androsteNOL have a smell that very few people can detect no matter how strong the sample. The uniquely female pheromone, copulins has an unmistakable fragrance of its own.
Smell or no smell, one very important thing to remember is that a true pheromone reaction does not depend on a consciously detected smell nor on preconditioning (memory of previous experience). It is subconscious and hard-wired into our system. It is hard to say exactly how much pheromone must be in the air to get the effects we are looking for, but it is quite likely that the threshold is considerably lower than that which would produce a conscious smell good or bad.
All the Best,

Research: Natural pheromone levels and sexual Stimuli
NOTE: The following article is the first of a two part series reprinted from the August and September, 1999 issues of the pheromone Research News. Part 2 will appear next month.
Well, in case you don’t have any celery [natural source of the pheromone androsterone], on hand you might want to read the following article. It describes another natural way to increase your pheromone levels. The scientific basis for the theory comes from a short report drawn from a speech given by the eminent Austrian pheromone researcher, Astrid Jutte.
The two most popular pheromones that have lately made their way into the news and into the fragrance industry as well are called, androstenone and androstenol. As with all other pheromones they are produced by hormones excreted by the body through the skin where they react with bacteria. These pheromones are quite volatile and move through the air where they are picked up by a specialized sensing apparatus (VNO) in the noses of those nearby, where they transmit vital information about us to those individuals. Since it is our own hormones that drive the production of pheromones, it stands to reason that higher levels of the androgen hormones (ones that cause the sex drive) will cause us to naturally produce higher levels of the pheromones that are popularly made in factories today with the very goal of attracting others for this purpose. Some interesting research performed by Dr. Jutte, shows us how we can do just that.
What is it chemically that makes us want to have sex? Surprisingly enough for both men and women it is the same hormone, testosterone! And, how can we establish if a man or women is interested in sexual activity. (for scientific purposes of course).
1. We can ask the subject: “ahem….um…excuses me…but..um….are you horney?”
2. We can check for blood flow to the genital area.
3. We can check testosterone levels.
All of these work but the first is apparently the least reliable especially with women according to the Jutte study. And how do we make people horney (for scientific purposes of course): porn movies! Yes, an equal number of male and female subjects in the Jutte study were shown a 15 minute pornographic video while they were alone, and their testosterone levels were checked via a saliva test at intervals before and after the “exposure”.
What were the results? Who gets hornier from watching sex scenes alone in a room., men or women? You women know the truth, while all the male readers have been believing the big lie for all these years. Scientific results show that………both men and women respond equally!!!! There was a little fudging on the horniness self-report forms by females apparently, but the medical tests showed equality between the sexes! Finally! Oh, by the way, there was one more difference besides the accuracy of the self-report forms, and that was the length of time that the video-induced testosterone “high” lasted. Again no surprise to women and that is that after the stimulating video has been turned off, the average male testosterone level was back to baseline in 15 minutes, ready to roll over and start snoring, while the lonely female testosterone level took much longer to calm down. I knew there had to be a medical explanation for that.
So, there you are; the facts are in. If you want to raise your pheromone level naturally, (which won’t crash out on you like your fickle testosterone level guys), just get yourself good and horney for at least 15 minutes.
But again, just in case, don’t forget to smile!

THE SEPTEMBER SURVEY:
This month’s survey was inspired by some interesting discussion on the pheromone Forum. The question was “how do you get from eye contact to verbal contact?” You see a stranger in the supermarket, you briefly make eye contact and maybe exchange a smile. Is it going to end there or could this chance encounter lead to a conversation, and if the latter then how?
THIS MONTH’S QUESTION:
What wisdom can you shed on starting a conversation with a stranger in a public place?
This could end up the “Shy Guy’s Handbook” since it is generally the man’s job to break the silence, but we could use advice from all sides: guys who are very good at this sort of thing, women who can give us the “inside info” about signs that women give when they would like to be approached; or it could be first hand success stories of how you met a spouse or significant other in a public place.
PLEASE INDICATE YOUR AGE GENDER AND MARITAL STATUS WHEN REPLYING!

NEW PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET
Essence of a Woman
Essence of a Woman (known as EW) is not actually a full-fledged product yet, but is destined to be released as one not too far down the road. It is an entirely copulins based product engineered to make use of research demonstrating the effects of human vaginal secretions at the time of ovulation on the testosterone level of nearby males. Informal study of the product is in progress now with results being posted on the pheromone Forum.
For more info on EW, check out the discussion on the
pheromone Forum. Use the “search” function or just browse around.
Bruce, I might just name my first born after you. Received my Scent of Eros shipment today. For the past two nights I went to the mall without pheros to establish some sort of baseline. It was pitiful and depressing for me. The first night only one female even looked at me, and no smiles(out of 34 that I counted walked within about five feet of me) 2nd night different mall, same time, same clothing, same result, one out of 22 actually looked at me. All the rest gave me the snob head turn (and no, I wasn’t staring at them like a sex-starved freak. Just casually observing) and walked by making it very obvious they were ignoring me. I went to Walgreens, to see if they had eye droppers so I can mix up some JB#1. I couldn’t find them, so I decided to ask the pharmacist if they carried them. In front of me was a woman, 35ish, discussing her prescription with the pharmacist lady. She kept talking and talking and I just patiently waited for at least five minutes. I’m guessing that standing there the SOE was building a heavy cloud around me. Finally, I interrupted to ask about the eyedroppers and the lady in front of me turned around and stared…..and stared….and stared, like she thought she knew me but couldn’t figure out who or where. Then she realized she was staring (not lustfully or smiling, more confused) and seemed a little embarrassed. Then on my way back home I stopped at the grocery store to see what happened. The cute meat counter girl (who I have tried to open conversation with before) was cleaning up the glass of the butcher display. So I walked up to her and asked a few “customer” type questions and we stood there and talked for a few mins. She has always been rather indifferent before. So now my curiosity is up, I decided to stop by Panda Exp.(Chinese food) for dinner to go. The cashier (17 if I had to guess) seemed a bit overly friendly. Maybe not in a flirty manner, but definitely different than what I have been used to for the past few years. Tomorrow night, the mall for a more in-depth study.
