Letter from the prez…
Hello Readers,

Yes, it has been 3 months since the last issue of the Pheromone News. With a baby, a 5 year old, a beautiful wife, a growing business, and a “day job” as well, it finally dawned on me to hire someone to take over the News. As much as I have enjoyed writing it, I am happy to announce that I have found a wonderful replacement in the form of Dale Andrews, who is actually a professional writer (what a concept!). He is also a Canadian, but I talked to him on the phone for quite a while and he didn’t say “aye?” even once, so I hope you will all welcome him warmly. 😉 He’s a great guy as well as a great writer.

By the way, my family and I just spent the last month touring the US on a half business half Disneyland/Sea World trip. We had a great time, arriving back here in Japan only yesterday. I think half my consciousness is still out over the Pacific somewhere, but I figure since Dale did such a fine job on the NEW pheromone Research News, the least I could do would be to add my opening monologue and send it out. Enjoy and….

Don’t forget to smile at someone today!

pheromone Q&A

Q: What happens if I mix cologne with pheromone products like The Edge or New pheromone Additive?

A: Some people say that mixing diminishes the potency and I have always tended to apply products separately, but I don’t think you need to worry about that. Just make sure you find the right ratio when you mix anything, and that varies according to the cologne you use and your own body chemistry. Experiment with small amounts, starting with about a 10% additive mix and work up. Someone recently said 20% worked well, and that sounds about right depending on the fragrance. Both the Edge and New Additive have the same type and amount of pheromones in each bottle, so it is probably just a matter of convenience which one you prefer.

Human Scent: The Forgotten Language

Your dog can smell fear, and a female pig will instantly assume a mating stance after a good whiff of the male of the species.

Have humans lost the ability to communicate in such a way? Most people would agree that we’re capable of detecting a wide range of scents, some pleasant, others not – but that’s where it ends. Yet, there is growing evidence that humans can not only detect emotions by scent, but also communicate in other ways with the equipment up our noses.

Conveying information
In the animal kingdom, smells can convey an enormous amount of information. Rats, for example, will behave in a nervous manner when they smell the odor emitted by other rats that have received a mild electric shock. But until a recent study, it was never clear whether humans could communicate in the same way.

Scientists have shown that people can actually recognize the smell of happiness or fear. Researchers Denise Chen (Monell Chemical Senses Center) and Jeannette Haviland (Rutgers University) asked a group of men and women to wear absorbent pads under their arms while watching humorous or frightening movie scenes.

The pads were put into separate jars and 37 men and 40 women were asked to sniff the contents and identify happy or scared smells. Most volunteers claimed they couldnft smell anything, but the guesses were still quite accurate.

gWomen were especially good at picking the male fear odor,h said Chen in a May, 1999 report in New Scientist.

Over three-quarters of the women, and more than half the men, correctly picked the jar containing the scent of fearful men. Over half of the women identified the jar with the scent of happy men. Still, men couldn’t identify the smell of fear from females or the happy scents of other males, according to New Scientist. One likely reason is that women generally have a better sense of smell.

In a related study, Chen and Haviland also showed that human body odors can affect our moods. In the experiment, 308 student volunteers were exposed to the scents of a wide range of people. The scent of old women had the most positive effect on volunteersf moods. In general, smells from older people and women improved the mood of the student volunteers.

Hormonal changes may make the body odor of older people, and especially women, signal they are approachable, said Haviland in a July 1999 report in New Scientist. On the other hand, she speculated it may also be that older women are generally happy and their scent can provoke this mood in others.

pheromone Connection
While the Chen and Haviland studies looked at the human ability to detect (and react to) certain human odors, other researchers have tried to pinpoint exactly how humans send and detect various signals.
The Vomeronasal organ (VNO) was found in animals as far back as the 1800s, and plays a crucial role in the mating and courtship behavior of many lower animals. The VNO was later discovered in humans but there has been some controversy as to whether it’s a working organ, or merely a nonfunctional vestige of our climb up the evolutionary ladder.

Many scientists now acknowledge the existence of the human VNO and it’s ability to receive certain stimuli and transmit the information to the brain. Whether those stimuli affect our behavior is still a controversial subject.

One study actually used sophisticated electronic equipment to measure the VNO’s operation, as reported in the June 2000 issue of Pheromone News. The study, titled Perfumery and the Sixth Sense, was funded by Erox Corp. (a manufacturer of pheromone-based colognes) and performed by Clive Jennings-White at the University of Utah.

Yet other research has shown that, at least in pigs, the VNO isn’t necessary at all for detection of the pheromone androstenone, a substance that signals sexual attraction and causes the female to adopt a mating stance. This study, by Drs. Dorries KM, Adkins-Regan E, and Halpern BP of Cornell University, could have implications in the human world.

After blocking off the VNO and measuring the behavior of these pigs versus normal “control” pigs, the researchers found that:
“Vomeronasal organ-blocked animals did not differ from untreated controls in either androstenone-mediated receptive standing behavior or attraction to the odor of androstenone. We conclude that in the domestic pig, the vomeronasal organ is not necessary for androstenone detection or androstenone-mediated sexual behavior in estrous females.”

Does this research let us conclude that humans, with our weaker VNO equipment, might detect pheromones in the same manner? At this point, the answer could be, maybe. The extremely overt reactions of pigs and other animals means it is far easier to examine their behavior. The human animal, on the other hand, is more difficult to study. Yet, there is valid scientific evidence to suggest that pheromones like androstenone and androstenol are somehow detected by humans, and contribute to our own mating and courtship behaviors.

In the meantime, take a deep breath and pay attention to what you smell; your nose could be trying to tell you something.

User Corner

Today I went to get a haircut so I figured it would be a good time to test some pheromones. I put Alter Ego and some cologne on my neck, and The Edge on my chest. Usually the lady that cuts my hair is pretty silent and never talks much, but today she wouldn’t shut up, and she asked a lot of personal questions. Also, I noticed an increased amount of looks and glances. Whenever I’m wearing AE girls do pay more attention to me, and some guys try to be my best buddy and others are really aggressive. At first I was skeptical of pheromones, but now I believe that there is something to them.
