So who has tried Randy Pants? Let\'s get busy, germs!

Throw Teach an apple here!

Even though I made up the formula off the top of my head, I really do suspect the

combo is really a thousand years old or something, and I\'m just ignorant of it! It is similar in approach to

Satyr (which also has a cinnamon-floral note), an ancient occult recipe A. Crowley repopularized for attracting

mates. I think this one is almost as good (although Randy Pants lacks the lovely animal musks. It would be a waste

for me to go there. Those who wish to nudge it that way can add a drop of valerian and/or cistus -- trust me here).

His formula is more successful for attracting gay men, I think, but I like mine for heteros. Do a little intentional

meditation and mantra with it after compounding if you want to imitate the ancients.

There is no way

to avoid spending the money on precious flower oils with this one. You can\'t do everything with lavender and

geranium, unfortunately. You could try ylang ylang, but there would be a definite drop off in effectiveness. The

balance would be totally changed, since ylang is spicy like the cinnamon, and doesn\'t enhance the wood note to

the same degree. Still, there\'s no harm in experimenting to make something with a different idea.

I get

around it sometimes by buying them diluted (Aromaland makes them this way) or diluting them 10:1 with jojoba once I

get them to make them last. (Maybe using a splash of alcohol on the empty bottle when transferring to a larger

bottle to avoid waste, and pouring the jojoba in that bottle first, also.)

In general, it\'s better to have

a few costly oils you love than huge stockpiles of cheap ones you\'ll rarely use. At least, that\'s been my

thinking. It\'s only different for me because I make things for other people.

Some substitute the cheaper petitgrain for neroli. So it\'s worth trying that. They both come from the same kind

of orange tree (leaves versus flowers), and have a sort of similar scent. It won\'t be quite as good, of course.

(A shout out to my cuz franki, for turning me on to the ever

annoying smirkicon.) But it won\'t clash. Petitgrain goes well with woods, in general.

Me too!!!

<hr /></blockquote><font

class=\"post\">
I will let everyone know when I\'ve finished the first perfume and run it by the boss. Today I

made a lot of progress on the men\'s creation, as well as the label and bottle art; which led me to believe it is

near finished. Of course \"near\" is a relative term!

I feel intoxicated right now from smelling it. It definitely has a

narcotic effect as part of the psychological package! Which brings me to today\'s tips:

1. Stop right

now and question the emotional qualities you like to create in your perfumes, in terms of images, stories, and

fantasies that spring to mind. Maybe you are thinking of marauding pirates, an intimate night at home, a night at

the opera, an orgy, a speakeasy, a racetrack, a rave, or a barber shop. Tell a little story about it. What effects,

images, and emotions would have to be experienced by yourself and others in order for those fantasies to be true? In

what order would they have to be, and how do you imagine the emotions would interact with each other? Lastly, what

oils might capture those emotions? Do a search on the internet with the oil and the word \"properties\" to get

hints. A great perfume orchestrates an experience for someone exposed to it, sort of like a movie does.

2.

Every good perfume must have a single theme! This is NOT to say you have to be able to put the theme into

words! But it is nonetheless a rule. Thinking about the psychology you want is one good way to make sure your

perfume has a theme.

Todays thought exercise: How is this approach I just described different from that of

\"aromatherapy\"?

Answer to the

above thought exercise:

You guys and gals need never be confused when people start talking about

\'aromatherapy\' while you are trying to talk about perfume. Aroma-therapy is about healing, and mitigating

harm. It presumes a lack, disease, or stressful circumstances; an unwellness.

Like aromatherapy,

perfuming is a science. But perfuming, as I have described it, is much bigger. It is world culture and

history; art; fashion; a form of recreation, sprituality and sensuous life enhancement. Since it trains the nose, it

enhances survival and procreation; as well as one\'s ability and sensitivity for intimacy. It is a social glue

that enables smelly humans to get along. Perfumes are items of prescious value, signifying status, sophistication,

magic, and enjoyment of life.

Now I am going to be so presumtuous as to \'assign homework.\' But how

can I get away with such preposterousness, you might ask, since none of you formally agreed to participate in any

class? The answer is, I am now categorically renouncing sensitivity! I can get away with it because I\'m a

bastard, and don\'t care! Neener, neener neener! And because I\'m going to wait to post new information until

some people get more involved! Because I do care. Because the

learning is mostly in the doing in perfumery.

Y\'all\'s assignment is to submit an original mix for

discussion, following the principles, examples and tips we have discussed so far. I\'m asking for folks to please

say something about the theme of their mix, not just give drops; and to say how the oils they have chosen

expresses that theme.

I agree with Elane. I go for the orientals, but I prefer

mostly vanilla-based ones like Allure and Shalimar.

I wear the straight perfume oils, which I order from Kuwait.

It\'s the same as the perfume, but no alchohol. I guess the Kuwaitis prefer their designer perfumes concentrated.
