    Franki,
    You are learning a

lot about baseball, aren\'t you? Is there much interest in the game in Germany? Do you hear that analysis of the

game in German or is it in English?

I pick up on those things

quite fast usually. Interest here is only marginal... Baseball here is on digital (cable) broadcast, what means that

you can choose between english and german commentary at baseball, football, hockey and golf broadcasts from the

    States.

That\'s nice, if you prefer to listen to the english-speaking commentary like me.

    Lookin\'

    very good! Congrats!

Still a rough road ahead this weekend though. It\'s back to Yankee Stadium and the

Yankees will be throwing their 2 ace pitchers at the Marlins. Of course that\'s what the Cubs did and the Marlins

prevailed through 3 consecutive must-win games, so... hey, lookin\' pretty good. You just have to win 1 of the

next two. Could happen tomorrow, so keep your eyes peeled for Marlin\'s trivia quizes.

    Go Marlins!

    Congrats Marlins for a fine

championship win! And against Andy Pettite too. Very fine.

Trivia quiz. Only folks who have not won a

baseball trivia contest yet please. $50. item(s) to the first corect answer to any one (and only one) of the

    following questions:

    1. Who was declared the Marlins\' most valuable player of the Series?

    2. Who was

overall the most important Marlin in getting the team to the championship?

    3. Who was probably the best pitcher

    in the history of baseball?

    4. Why was he relatively unrecognized during his career?

    5. Why did he once

    intentionally walk 3 consequetive batters?

OK, folks. Post your answer to one and ONLY one question here. First

come first serve. Let\'s give the folks who have not won anything a chance first and see if we can get them all

    answered.

    Good luck,
    Bruce

Well, he was great too, but

not the guy I was thinking of. Probably a bad question; very subjective. The key is \"to the championship\".

The guy I\'m thinking of got a lot of press as a one man show in the playoffs against the Giants. He was also a

major pain in the neck against the Cubs.

    Try again.

No. This is a tough one. Questions 4 and 5 give pretty hefty clues, but you might want to try

    I have a question (not

    for prizes or anything, sorry):

What\'s the name of the one-armed man who was intentionally walked with the

bases loaded because he was so fierce?

I remember seeing this statistic in Triple Play \'98, but it never said

who it was, the team, etc.

    Pancho,

    Maybe you are

only joking, but there are only 4 verifiable intentional walks with the bases loaded; 1 relatively recently.

Napoleon Lajoie (May 23, 1901): The Philadelphia Athletics were batting against the White Sox in the top of the

ninth inning. They were behind, 11-7, but had the bases loaded and none out with Lajoie — on his way to a Triple

Crown — at bat. Manager Clark Griffith inserted himself as a relief pitcher and \"calmly sent four wide ones

across\" to deliberately force in a run, bringing future home run champs Socks Seybold and Harry Davis up with the

bases still full. Griffith then disposed of Seybold, Davis and Morgan Murphy on infield grounders, saving the 11-9

    victory.

    • Del Bissonette (May 2, 1928): The Giants held a 2-0 lead over the Robins in the top of the ninth, but

Brooklyn loaded the bases with two out. Giants manager John McGraw ordered pitcher Larry Benton to walk rookie

Bissonette, in his 16th major league game, purposely ending the shutout. Benton then struck out Harry Riconda to end

    the game.

    • Bill Nicholson (July 23, 1944 — second game of a doubleheader): The Giants led the Cubs, 10-7, in the

top of the eighth with the bases loaded, none out, and Nicholson — who had homered four times already that day — at

the plate. Giants manager Mel Ott (who was probably sitting next to McGraw at the Bissonette game) ordered Ewald

Pyle to walk Nicholson, bringing up Dom Dalesandro, Andy Pafko and Don Johnson. The Cubs tied the score up by the

time the inning was over, but New York won, 12-10.

    • Barry Bonds (May 28, 1998): The Diamondbacks led the Giants,

8-6, in the bottom of the ninth, with two out, the bases loaded and Bonds up. Arizona manager Buck Showalter ordered

Gregg Olson to issue the intentional base on balls, putting the tying run on third and the winning run on second.

Brent Mayne then lined out to end the game.
