Doesnt the word yoga come from
the word yogi? I was once told a true yoga teacher is also a spiritual teacher, and involves alot more than just
streching and breathing techniques.
What is yoga? It is to become one
with that Supreme Entity. When you become one with the Supreme you are getting everything, you are losing nothing.
You are losing only your little name, the name of your little "I", and nothing else, and in return you are getting
the Supreme "I". This is yoga in the spiritual sphere. Some people think that yoga means a particular exercise.
No, yoga does not mean exercise; yoga means unification.

To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.

A yogi is a practitioner of yoga;
both words come from the sanskrit word for union, so yeah, there is probably more to it than just some stretching
exercises.
In one of the first if not the first written treatises on the subject, yoga is described as having 8
"limbs", which are:
yama (moral principles)
niyama (other personal conduct guidelines)
asanas (the "stretching
exercises" yoga)
pranayama (breathing exercises)
pratyahara (withdrawal; preliminary to meditation)
dharana
(concentration exercises)
dhyana (contemplation)
samadhi (union with the Supreme Consciousness)
By that
definition, yeah, I guess there is quite a bit more involved than some stretching exercises.
