    Post Pheromone production question.

    visit-red-300x50PNG
I did a search. I used the phrase “pheromone production” and “pheromone

manufacture techniques.” I found no results. Can any one tell me how they produce synthetic pheromones?

On reason for my question is, in a previous post, a comment was made that that there was something in this

person’s bottle. This person jokingly commented that this could be someone’s DNA. This does not concern me. It

did however queue me to peruse the already prevalent question in my mind. How are these things made? Do

they synthesize these by manipulating molecules, or are they harvested, purified, separated and graded.

Any and all information would be useful, desired and

    appreciated.
I am capable of understanding chemistry. If I

don’t understand, I will study the appropriate sources to gain the foundation nessary to grasp the production

concepts. I am not interested in producing pheromones in a laboratory my self. I would however like to

understand the production methods as an academic

    exercise.

    Thanks!

    I'm guessing they're

synthesized from a naturally occuring precursor. The first 75 words of this article says that most steroid

horomones are synthsized from the plant compound diosgenin, which comes from yams.

Here's a slightly older article from Pubmed that says the same

    thing.

    I

also found information on hecogenin and tigogenin, which are also plant saponins like diosgenin.
    Hecogenin is used

    to make corticosteroids.
Tigogenin is used to make anabolic, estrogens, and contraceptives.
