Hmmm... That might not be such a good idea. A proper lawyer wouldn't touch your

question and you don't know what kind of experience the rest of us have.

This site has lots of good,

    practical advice:

    Well, at this point any

advice would be greatly appreciated... I feel so backed up to a wall right now... and I feel so stressed and dying

is looking as if its such a great option right now...

I'm not sure where to start, so I guess I will start by

    introducing myself.
My name is Bryan and I am an International Student since Spring of 2000 on an F-1 visa. My

status requires me to be in full-time student status which is at least 12 credits per semester. I have always been

"in-status" and never violated this rule. My major is Computer Science
I am also currently working on-campus as a

part-time student worker. I have worked for the school for about more than 4 years now continously as a part-timer.

I work as a Network person which basically troubleshoots networks and phone issues. I also lay down and install

cables for the school. I get paid $8/hr. I do not get over-time pay. My salary has been the same for the past 3

years and I am limited to working 17 hours a week. Although I have been working far more than that since jobs needs

    to be finished.
I have calculated how much I have saved the school and it came to about roughly $800,000 for those

3 years. Excluding training numerous other workers who have been hired in the department.
    Several job openings have

opened up for a full-time position in my department. And I have applied numerous times for these positions without

even getting an interview until this last week... around august 26. Only then was I given the chance to "try out"

    for the job.
Needless to say, I did terribly on my interview, nevertheless, the reason why I applied was I told to

do so by my current suprvisor saying I had a chance since I have been working there for so long.
    Following Monday,

August 30, I was called in to the Hiring Manager or Director of my department and was told all of the benefits of

the job such as insurance benefits etc. The only thing he left out is the salary pretty much. Needless to say, he

also mentioned that this will be my "trial week" etc etc.
So I worked my @ss off and came in everyday working

probably more than 40 hours last week.
On Thursday, I went in to my school's international center to apply for

the work permit which is given by the school, not the INS. It is called Curricular Practical Training and it allows

me to work full-time as long as I am working for elective credits and it is related to my Major. Then did I find out

that I apparently have not been "chosen" yet. So, now the dilema arrises that they cannot even process it if I am

    not chosen for the position.
I head up to my "boss" and asked him about it and he tells me that he never offered me

the job and I shouldnt be assuming things. And right now, he doesnt think I will be getting the position.
    Again,

needless to say I am extremely angry about this and I am exploring my legal options... I have worked so hard and

dedicated to this job, I have sacrificed literally sweat and blood. I do not get insurance from the job so even when

I fell of a ladder, I had to pay doctors for my self.
I would really appreciate any advice that you guys can

give... As I understand, as long as I am here legally (which I am) I am basically given the same rights? I could be

    wrong... help?

I do know that they are absolutely not required to hire me.
I guess my point is that it was

after this incident where they offered me the job then suddenly pulled out of it was where I actually felt

    exploited.

To try to keep me there under "market-salary" to save them hundreds of thousands of $.

    I am so

    sorry for the long read...

    Bryan:

    To have some sort of

legal case you have to either have a contract with them or be able to prove discrimination.

    I'm guessing you

    can show neither.

Your best bet is to look for jobs in the classifieds for local businesses. If you can do

computers, you can get a job. Another thing - take comfort in the fact that you will be making money once you

graduate college. 40 hours a week is a lot for a student. You have school to worry about. You shouldn't

necessarily piss away all of your free time when you can be having fun. You are only in college once.

    I

worked too in school, a few times over 100 hours a week. I just got a fee, and let me tell you, I probably made 3

bucks an hour when all was said and done my first year.

If you need money paying for school, you could make

more money bartending than working for 8 bucks an hour anyway. You can also do stuff like tutoring or other jobs.

I would step away from the situation and explore your options.
