There’s just too much good music —

even rap ( Common, Dead Prez, the Coup) and country (Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Lyle Lovitt) — to make a definitive

    answer.

Looking back it’s fairly easy to pick out bands and artists that had a definitive impact on the rock

scene: the Beatles, Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Neil Young, and the Clash are my favorites in this category. Then

there’s musicians that have sort of carved out their own niche: Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Sonic Youth, Bjork & Buffalo

Daughter have all covered some very interesting ground IMO. With rock, you’ve got to respect bands that can blow you

away live: the Who (yes, kids, I saw the original Who live), Iggy Pop, U2 (in their time), Tool, Smashing Pumkins,

Built to Spill. Among contemporery bands I prefer the ones that manage to keep a raw edge to their music: White

Stripes, Apex Theory, System of a Down.
But there’s one band that had all these qualities and an in your

face, turbo-charged rebelious attitude to boot. (What’s rock without rebellion?) The greatest f@#$ing rock band of

all time: RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE.

But when all is said and done, rock and roll is little more than

mood music. A couple of bars to pump you up, or simply get you through the day.
    When you’re ready to take

your ear to a deeper level, when you crave some kind of harmony, some kind of groove, some kind of intuitive

understanding... you’ve got to sit down and listen to some real jazz. Medeski, Martin and Wood are doing some

interesting things, Wayne Shorter is still clearing new ground, Danilo Perez is reinventing the piano, Wynton

Marsalis is turning the New Orleans sound into a higher art form, and the Be-Bop pioneers (John Coltrane, Art

Blakey, Thelonius Monk) never grow old.
There’s lots of great jazz musicians. But there’s only one Miles

Davis. Zen master of the horn. (One note could change your whole perception of everything. The man could spit, and

it would still be music.) The bodhisatva of cool. (He could take you through the darkest emotions of the human heart

and you would still come out unfazed.) Avatar of AUM. ( He could harmonize with anything. If the universe is

ultimately a field of vibrations, Miles is the jam session.)

went over to my friends house the other day to fix his computer, and he has two little sisters who are in 2nd and

4th grade, and they also had theyre friends over, and while i was fixing their computer, they were all rapping

freestyle, omg I just wanted to turn around and bludgen them to death. I've seen kids as young as 7 rapping to

Eminem. Where the hell is the world headed?!

I don't care for much rap

either, or rap metal...it really annoys me. I have heard some rap that I like, but it's the old school stuff like

Kool Mo Dee, Public Enemy and Run DMC. The stuff that's coming out now is just obscene and I'm not just talking

about the language either...it just sucks in an obscene way.
As far as the little kids rapping to eminem, there

are some parents who buy that stuff for their kids.

    I don't get the whole Korn/Limp

Bizkit/Linkin Park schtick. I just don't get it. Or this fascination with Fred Worst. What a dork.

    The only

bands I liked out of that genre--and I actually still like 'em a lot--were Rage Against The Machine and

    311.

As regards rap, for me it's The Last Poets, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Gangstarr/Guru, Positive

Black Soul, MC Solaar, Gox-Bi System, the NWA camp, Run-DMC, Whodini, Arrested Development, etc., etc.

    Loved

The Notorious B.I.G., never got 2Pac.

Much as I hate to admit it, I do enjoy Eminem's work, as well.

    MB
I've been hearing things about Danzig's ego and

nasty attitude for many years now, but dude may be a bit more humble since what happened in Arizona, on July 4th.

You probably have seen it already (it's all over the web these days) but here's some links in case you haven't.

Can't say he didn't have it coming.

I saw Danzig back in the very

early 90s with (get this) White Zombie. It was Danzig's original solo lineup. Great band.

    The guy's

over-the-top attitude and Elvis-meets-King Kong Bundy vocal stylings are hilarious, but an original is an

    original.

    "Astro Zombies" is a classic.

Default Attitude...you got some f***in attitude!

I saw Danzig and Samhain back in '99. It was a good show...high energy all the way through. But I'm

glad he got knocked out...maybe it will teach him a lesson. He's made many claims in interviews about how he could

dessimate anyone in front of him with his Jeet Kune Do skills and so on. His whole image has revolved around how a

big macho evil tough guy he's supposed to be and he gets knocked out for the world to see .
    I was on the

official fansite recently and if you mention anything about the fight in the forum, the post will be deleted.

    I

think I'll put on Walk Among Us. All this Danzig talk...now I need a Misfit fix!

Personally, I like to listen to

rap music. Unfortunately, most mainstream rap nowadays is about nothing. The lyrics are total garbage. But the

thing I like about mainstream rap are the beats, so I like to listen to it when I work out. For more substance in

the lyrics, I usually look to underground rappers.

    Actually I have a favorite

song right now.. I'm sure I'll get sick of it pretty soon thou' since I play it like 10 times a day.. I

love to sing along with him ...oh! yeah! I like a few songs by Maroon 5 but this is my fave right now.

    This Love

    Lyrics

I was so high I did not recognize
    The fire burning in her

    eyes
The chaos that controlled my mind
Whispered goodbye and she got on a plane
    Never to return again
    But always

    in my heart

This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
    And her heart is breaking

    in front of me
I have no choice cause I won't say goodbye anymore

I tried my best to feed her appetite
    Keep

    her coming every night
So hard to keep her satisfied
Kept playing love like it was just a game
    Pretending to feel

    the same
Then turn around and leave again

This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times

    before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won't say goodbye anymore

    I'll fix

    these broken things
    Repair your broken wings
    And make sure everything's alright
    My pressure on your

    hips
    Sinking my fingertips
    Into every inch of you
Cause I know that's what you want me to do

    This love has

    taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
    I have no

choice cause I won't say goodbye anymore

This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times

    before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
She said Goodbye too many times before

    This love has taken its

    toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
