View Full Version : A mystery to solve.

Years ago I was living

in Alaska and working in Prudhoe Bay. Lots of amazing stories to be told. I thought I\'d share this one just for

fun. A mystery for you to solve.

A Norwegian guide took two Japanese tourists out on the frozen Bearing Sea. They

went out from Little Diomede Island over the ice to try and make it to the International Date Line just to say

they\'d had half of their body in tomorrow and the other half in yesterday. Or something like that. Crazy people

with too much money. Anyway, they made it to the Line and the guide, in celebration, pulled a bottle of Everclear

and three shot glasses out of his back pack. He filled the glasses, made a toast and tossed back the drink. Before

the tourists could do the same the guide fell over on his side. DOA before he hit the ice.

What killed him?

This is a true story and you may ask me

Q\'s but the answer is in the story as told. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Is this one of

those \"critical thinking\" questions?

Cause I hate those.

Possible

ridiculous responses to this question:

-The guide made such a funny comment in his toast he died

laughing.

-Taking a shot on the International Date Line made him simultaneously feel the buzz and hangover

effects at the same time---half feeling a nice buzz, the half in \"tomorrow\" feeling pretty crappy---and

therefore caused a massive overload that killed him instantly.

-He hit an iceberg...and the estate made hundreds

of millions of dollars selling the movie rights.

-All of the contents in the bottle froze due to the sub-freezing

temperatures except for the alcohol, which in such high concentration killed the man instantly.

-The Japanese

tourists sure know how to mix \"Kamakazis\"...

-He went crazy trying to figure out his own riddle that his head

exploded.

Just got a PM from

Belgareth who has the answer. Class act that he is he held off on posting it. One of Pancho\'s answers is very

close.

Drinking even

a moderate amount everclear would cause a stroke or massive vascular damage and internal bleeding. It\'s well

known that it\'s poison drunk straight, no matter where you are. If he drank the whole bottle, or even part of it,

obviously that did it. Even one shot could kill you on an empty stomach, depending.

Damn Doc, I wish I

would have known that back during my Everclear drinking days. That explains a lot.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The Guide died because he had been carrying the EC in his back

pack and it was as cold as the ambient outdoor temp. which was about 30 below zero. The shot tossed and swallowed so

quickly froze his throat and then his heart. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

No, it isn\'t nonsense. I was stationed in Alaska for two

winters. That kind of cold is deadly! I don\'t know if it froze his heart specifically but it is well known up

there that it can and will kill you.

I just don\'t

think we were given enough information in the original question. The 30 below part didn\'t come until

later.

How are the summers up there?

belgareth
04-06-2004, 06:28 AM
Sorry. From my

perspective the 30 below was obvious from the comment about the Bering sea being frozen. But I\'ve been there and

that probably made the difference. The summers depend on where you are. I spent a part of one summer about 100 miles

east of Fairbanks and it was great; 70-75 degrees most the time. Anchorage was a little cooler but not much. The

worst part is the mesquitos and black flies. Those are plentiful and vicious!

My heart is

broken. I knew it couldn\'t last. The strong bond that Bel and Exit formed may be cracking. Keep it together

boys...keep it together. Don\'t let one little thread tear you apart.

<hr /></blockquote><font class=\"post\">

Not so Mr. Exit. It\'s a true story. Probably didn\'t freeze

his whole heart but enough to stop it. It takes a whole lot of very cold to freeze a Sea. Any temp. below zero is a

different world to live and work in. Truck engines never get turned off when the temp. is that low, they let them

run 24/7 all winter long. The summers are a nasty bitch too. High humidity and bugs that only have two things on

their mind. There is a beauty to Alaska all year round. Some of the scenery, especially in winter, will stop your

heart just looking at it. I\'m glad I\'m not up there any more though. Next week I\'ll tell the tale of

\"Squisher Fisher the Killer Driller\".

I

don\'t see how one could drink it straight. I once wanted to make a martini, but had no gin. Found a bottle of

Everclear though. Took one sip of my new cocktail and it burnt so much I poured the rest down the sink.
