View Full Version : Cold/Cough remedies
Does anyone know what i
can do to help me get rid of this bad cold, sore throat cough?
What products out there do you guys recommend that
WON\'T make you drowsy. I am extremely sensitive to that stuff, and have to work, not sleep.
Right now I am
taking a goldenseal/echinecea herb, selenium, and wellness tea from celestial seasonings. It has not helped
much.
What products have you guys tried that you would recommend (no herbs please).
thanks

A bus load of
vitamin C and lots of liquids... Day-Quil is pretty good if you just want to get rid of the symptoms.
Oh, yea, I been
drinking OJ and taking vitamins. Thanks. I heard about Dayquil, but even though the name is different then night
quil, can\'t it still make you drowsy?

Try one of the
sports drinks instead of OJ to replenish your electrolytes. It helps a lot.
wow, that sounds like
a great idea!

Dayquil
won\'t make you drowsy. I think it lacks the alcohol that knocks you out, plus I\'m sure it has other stuff in
it, too, to prevent drowsiness.
thanks for the tip

Dayquil has a mild stimulant in it to offset the drowsyness of the
medications. I\'m a little sensitive to it myself and can only take half doses. Otherwise I get real edgy.

He\'s right! I was ill, once, and a 1,000 calorie, 50 g. protein drink
gave me a MAJOR boost.

Dayquil contains ephedrine... which breaks down into adrenaline.

bjf,
There\'s
something that I pick up at my local convenience store that I find does WONDERS for relieving the symptoms of colds.
It\'s SOBE brand \"LIZZ BLIZZ\". (It used to be called Lizzard Blizzard.*) It\'s usually in the refrigerated
section with the fancy iced teas and herbally infused fruit drinks.
It looks like skim milk, but tastes like a
pina colada. It contains Zinc, Echinacea, and Vitamin C, (same ingredients as COLD-EEZ, I believe) and it\'s about
the best buck and a quarter you\'ll ever spend in terms of its ability to make you feel better when you have a
cold.
I always keep a couple of bottles in the fridge just in case I need it.
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
*To the best of my knowledge, LIZZ BLIZZ contains no actual
lizard or lizard by-products.

Ahh, I\'ve
seen that stuff. We\'ve always referred to it as \"lizard jizz\" because the cans are turned just enough that
you can\'t see the whole label, and that\'s what it looks like it says at a glance.
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Good stuff though. I have a cold myself, so I might go get
some. Thanks! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Dammit! You
stole my joke! I was going to write:
\"Well, good thing it\'s not \'Lizz-jizz\' because then it probably
does contain lizard by-product...\"
You beat me to the punch! Oh, well.

Honestly, this is not
the direction I wanted to take this thread .... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Vit. C is good,
but get some Zinc lozenges and suck on them. (legitimate) Research has shown that they shorten the cold\'s
duration and reduce symptoms.
Great. Will get the
zinc lozenges.
I went aroudn to four or five stores looking for the SOBE drink. They didn\'t have them. I
know of one health food store I can go to, but it is a little chilly out, and I don\'t want to be outside, so I am
gong to try and go thurs/fri and stock up if they have them.

You can
usually find them in the drink section of convenience stores.
Yea I know, that\'s
where I was checking out. I saw a lot of the crazy drinks, but no SOBE
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif, even though one place had a SOBE refrigerator.

The Lizard
Blizzard seems more difficult to find than other Sobes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif But
it\'s great stuff.
On another note, X Clear and Zicam are two nasal spray items that work. X Clear gets rid of
viruses like nobody\'s business and Zicam seems to speed up recovery time as well.

Thanks homes. I am
getting great info on this stuff!
And since winter is coming up, and everyone gets colds, hopefully others will
be able to take advantage of this information.

Along with
vitamins, I highly recommend Reishi tea for boosting the immune system. I\'ve been drinking it for a couple of
years and have only had one cold since and it was a mild one.
Good stuff.

Zycam is the
best stuff by far! Start tiking it as soon as you feel the cold comming on, 2 days later no cold.
Numanoid and
phersurf, this is all great stuff to know.
I emailed the chinese herbal tea place to see if it is in stores, but
they don\'t really know. It is some expensive stuff though for tea, but I want to try it.
I\'ve never heard
or seen zycam in drugstores. It doens\'t require a perscription, does it?

Yes, Reishi tea is
usually found in the ethnic/vegetarian section of even small-town grocery stores in the South, so you should be able
to find it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Look over by the rice milk and couscous and see if
it\'s not there.
The Zycam is about $10 a box, and it\'s a swab you rub on the inside of your nose about
every 4 hours, if memory serves. It does cut down the time you\'re sick, but I\'ve never seen something gone in
2 days. Maybe we\'re only afflicted by the heavy-duty bugs down here.

Update on
the Liz-jizz, if anybody still can\'t find it.
I\'ve seen it in every Walgreen\'s I\'ve been in in the
last few months.

I never could find it that day when I needed it but I even checked a store
the other day on a whim.

Something I
use that\'s been fantastic for me is called Kold Kare. It used to be called Kan Jang.
Check out
www.kare-n-herbs.com (\"http://www.kare-n-herbs.com\")
If you cannot find this brand, the sole active
ingredient is the herb Andropgraphis paniculata (leaf) extract with 4% Andrographolides. I buy mine from my friendly
neighborhood Vitamin Shoppe.
Full disclosure: I have no financial interest in any of the companies I mentioned
above. But that Kold Kare works great for me for flu, sinusitis and colds. Like any other treatment, you have to
find what works for you.
I\'ve also tried putting hydrogren peroxide in my ear. I got this from mercola.com. I
haven\'t had enough experience doing that so I can\'t really say if it works or not. I got better all the times
I did it but who knows? I use an eyedropper. I try to lie there until the fizzling stops. Usually about 15 minutes.
Then I roll over and do the other ear. I agree, it sounds like voodoo and witchcraft. But medical science has made
its share of bloopers too. I just threw out my bottle of Ipecac because they now say you shouldn\'t give it to
kids who\'ve ingested poisons. So let\'s give the witches and shamans a chance. Hydrogen peroxide is cheap and,
as long as you don\'t irritate your ear by using it frequently, it can\'t hurt you.

Also,
before taking and airline flight swab the inside of your nose with it and it will help you not get sick from the
flight.

I use
peroxide periodically to remove the potatoe fields from my ears. Its a great way to clean the ears without poking q
tips in there. The fizz loosens the wax so its easier to clean.
