The slowness has reached CST

The

forum is really slow (ex. up to 5 min to load a page)the last couple days, no matter which connection/computer I

use. And it\'s only this site. I\'m also getting \"We Cannot Proceed\" pages with lots of error messages when

I try to open forums, but not every time.

Is anyone else getting this?

been slow this weekend! No error messages though. SRH, you may want to check your Internet Options, under security.

Make sure your security isn\'t set too high. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ActiveX can also

cause problems. If the problem continues, try disabling ActiveX, to see if that doesn\'t help.

think it has anything to do with the forum itself. Sometimes it runs like lightening for me, sometimes slow. Same

thing with my Hotmail account. I think it is do to general network loads.

Do you own your servers? I ask because, most servers are cached for speed. When the cache gets

overloaded, things will slow down. The best way to resolve the problem is to clear everything from memory by

powering down the server to remove everything from memory. I work with Intranet servers all the time and that\'s

what I do to clear everything up. If you have the ability to shut down your server, I would do so. It should resolve

the intermittent slow downs that the forum is experiencing.

I don\'t own the servers,

so I don\'t have that kind of control. Actually, I\'m not convinced that the slow-down has anything to do with

the server. The perception of a slow-down seems to depend more on the location of the user than the server, with

some users reporting snail speeds while others are reporting lightening speeds at the exact same point in

time.

We are at a unique moment in the history of the internet: vast numbers or web surfers are suddenly using

cable hook-ups for the first time in their lives, and cable hook ups are notorious for delivering a wide range of

sppeds to users. At 4 AM I could easily get 10 times the speed I get at peak hours. Cable speed also seems to

depend how many folks in your immediate neighborhood are hooked up. Then there is general network traffic. I

forget where it is located, but there is a website that publishes a regularly updated map of the world which details

network traffic on a % of norm basis and explains routing problems.

Anyway, there are a lot of issues which

affect the speed that a webpage loads. I think whenever the forum is slow on my computer, my hotmail mailbox is

even slower.

This week

the forum does seem slow. I have a high speed connection (not DSL or Cable--for the real nerds, it\'s an OC-12

connection feeding a Cisco 6500 giving me a wire speed of 100MB)and it seems that this is the only slow forum I\'m

seeing.

Bruce,

I understand what your saying. The problem is that it\'s only this site that is slow. I have a high

speed cable connection, and the only site that\'s slow, is this one. That tells me that the problem is with the

L-S forum.

You have a 50/50 shot at hotmail being slow. At peak times, that site is very slow. Hotmail, has a

heavy traffic issue. The L-S forum doesn\'t have an abundance of traffic at any given time. Not enough to slow

things down at least.

While your explanations are very valid, they suggest that the users IP connection is slow,

or the connection type is slow, which is not the case here. Many have said that the L-S forum is the only place that

they are having a problem with, myself included.

I will admit, that I have no idea why some are having a problem

while others aren\'t. Never seen this one before.

Is it any

better now? I really didn\'t think there was anything wrong with the forum itself until just now. I finally got

one of those error screens. The message being that the forum was overloaded. Well, there are a good few folks

using it, but we\'ve had many more and no problems.

Anyway, I shut the forum down briefly and ran some

maintanence. I don\'t know if it did anything, but I\'m not getting the error message anyway. It it still

seems slow, I\'ll call someone tomorrow. For me it is just like the rest of the internet, sometimes very slow and

sometimes it flicks from screeen to screen like lightening, no pause at all.
