View Full Version : A Paradox

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings
but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints.

We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less.

We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences,
but less time.

We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less
judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but
less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh
too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too
tired, read too little, watch TV too much and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.

We talk too much, love too seldom and hate too often.

We\'ve learned how to make a living, but not a life.

We\'ve added years to life not life to years.

We\'ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble
crossing the street to meet a new neighbor.

We conquered outer space but not inner space.

We\'ve done larger things, but not better things.

We\'ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.

We\'ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice.

We write more, but learn less.

We plan more, but accomplish less.

We\'ve learned to rush, but not to wait.

We build more computers to hold more information, to produce
more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and
small character, steep profits and shallow relationships.

These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses,
but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality,
one-night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from
cheer, to quiet, to kill.

Upsidedown already posted this in a thread called \"Thoughts from George Carlin\"

I disagree. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That\'s the whole \"good ol\' days\" rubbish you always hear from people. People purposely forget the bad stuff in the past, and love whinging about the bad stuff in the present.

Fact is, things were always [bad word], they\'re [bad word] now, and they\'ll be [bad word] in the future. That\'s just the way of things.

Got it, Thanks Elana.

But mine is the shorter version, easily readable, therefore easier to apprehend.

You wouldn\'t mind I leave this?

Thanks.

The implications that things are worse than they were, and that we\'re worse people as a whole.

The essay was not insinuating ALL the people. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Some of these points have relevance to me, for example.

If you\'re not in any catagory, for instance, well you\'re OK. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

How about that?

Yes, I too long for the good ole days of 3 channels on tv. I can\'t comment on reading by candlelight though. I\'m old, but not that old.

Here\'s another one:

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we
like to get old is when we\'re kids?

If you\'re less than 10 years old, you\'re so excited
about aging that you think in fractions.

\"How old are you?\" \"I\'m four and a half!\" You\'re never
thirty-six and a half. You\'re four and a half, going
on five!

That\'s the key. You get into your teens, now they
can\'t hold you back.

You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.

\"How old are you?\" \"I\'m gonna be 16!\" You could be 13,
but hey, you\'re gonna be 16!

And then the greatest day of your life . . . you
become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony . . .
YOU BECOME 21. . . YESSSS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there?
Makes you sound like bad milk.
He TURNED, we had to throw him out. There\'s no fun
now, you\'re just a sour-dumpling. What\'s wrong? What\'s
changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you\'re PUSHING 40.

Whoa! Put on the brakes, it\'s all slipping away.
Before you know it, you REACH 50 . . . and your dreams
are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn\'t think you
would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE
it to 60.

You\'ve built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After
that it\'s a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You get into your 80s and every day is a complete
cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH
bedtime.

And it doesn\'t end there. Into the 90s, you start
going backwards; \"I was JUST 92.\"

Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100,
you become a little kid again. \"I\'m 100 and a half!\"

May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

@seadove ok then I\'ll release some of my favourites , every now and then in this section.

I think GEORGE CARLIN is the best , SIMPLY THE BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST EVER EVER EVER EVER stand up comedian of ALL times.

And believe me I know them ALL...from bill cosby to eddy murphy\'s delirious and raw times. Sure their stuff was funny as hell aswell , but nothing comes close to Carlins INCREDIBLE intelligence /sharp mind/sceptism/sarcasm and a way/a gift to SEE the goofy $[bad word] in everything! He is a living bull$hit detector. Thats someone I would have loved to have as grandfather/president of my country/neighbour whatever.Great mind , great person !

Ok part one will be on airports...
