View Full Version : On romance novels

Hey, I was reading the womens\' forum history and come up with an interesting argument about romance novels. It is said that the romance novels (good ones) posess key elements that make women hot. I think it is a good place to start for a guy like me. Do you have any suggestions on \"educational\" romance novels and do you think it is THAT much important for a guy to posess the romance novel elements?

Having done a bit of research on the net and visiting a bookstore to validate my findings, I\'d recommend \"I Brake for Bad Boys\" and \"I Love (heart) Bad Boys\", a series of collected novellas. I flipped through these and found them interesting enough and will pickup a copy at the used book store later this week.

Amazon has a reader\'s list of hottest romance novels that you may want to check out:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/listmania/list-browse/-/SV2OPOK04L8Z/qid%3D1050941933/sr%3Dlmlf-10/ref%3Dbr%5Flmlf%5F%5F10/002-0036403-0400059 (\"http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/listmania/list-browse/-/SV2OPOK04L8Z/qid%3D1050941933/sr%3Dlmlf-10/ref%3Dbr%5Flmlf%5F%5F10/002-0036403-0400059\")

Another list had Janelle Denison and Nicole Jordan as authors of the sexiest of the year novels. Denison contributed to the \"Bad Boys\" series.

Still, don\'t think that you\'re going to get \"Penthouse Collected Letters\" in these - the female mind doesn\'t work the same as a male\'s.

I have never read them, except for one called \"Shanna\" that was hot because the hero was really a sexy guy, a supposed criminal no less (we like the bad boys?), and Shanna was an ice princess so of course she fell for him eventually but it took a long time (he had to buck all kinds of obstacles, but of course the ice princess was worth it). It was really kind of mesmerizing, but I couldn\'t read those types of books very much (too repetitious). It\'s the only romance I ever really read, so may not be a good example.

Evidently they are hot sellers though.

Which life is that? The one where you were some rogue knight who marries her by force, makes her fall in love with him, and proves her wrong by saving them all from their enemies? Or the one where you\'re an Indian who saves the stranded white woman and shows her what she\'s been missing while you save her from her past? Or the one where you\'re an a$$hole guy nobody would date, but there\'s something endearing about you that she falls for, and oh by the way, you save the day? Or were you the rich a$$hole british lord who makes her agree to some plan to save her that\'s filled with ulterior motives, but in the end she falls for him anyway and he saves her from her past life?

Did I miss any of the cliche plots, y\'all? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Gee, SRH, guess you\'re not a big reader of romance, eh? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I agree that most of the romance novels out there tend to be cliqued, but there are a few authors who write really good stories along with the hot scenes. Yeah, romance novels *are* sort of soft porn (some more than others!), but from the right authors (Nora Roberts, Elizabeth Lowell- present day only), you can really get involved with the characters and their lives- just like with any other good book. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My grandmother died a few years back, and she left BAGS of romance novels for us to go through. I read the backs of a lot of them to see if there was something I might want to keep. Those plots seemed to be the main pattern, and they don\'t interest me. Yeah, the sex scene may be good, but why bother with all the other reading you have to do when you can pretty much tell how it\'s gonna end?
I can\'t say a whole lot though about people\'s taste in books. Gimme a good fantasy book any day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Believe it or not, I\'ve only read Vector Prime and part of Dark Tide I of the NJO series, so I haven\'t gotten into the prequels yet. I got into some other stuff, then read a bunch of Tolkein\'s stuff again (Silmarillion took FOREVER), then started up on some of Modessitt\'s Recluce series. I got half-way through that, then had a hard time finding any of the rest of the books, so a friend turned me on to the FR series by Salvatore. As for that, the best place to start is at the beginning, with \'The Crystal Shard\' in the Icewind Dale Trilogy.
I skipped the Cleric Quintet. I may be wrong, but it didn\'t seem to have anything to do with Drizzt Do\'Urden, and I\'m too interested in his doings atm to care about getting sidetracked. Unless of course it\'s Harry Potter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

DaVinciKittie

Definitely keep going with the NJO. It\'s such an emotional roller coaster, it\'s a little scary sometimes. By the time you get to year 2 you start to feel like you really *are* at war, and unlike the previous SW novels, NONE of the characters are guaranteed to make it out alive. I think it makes them a little more exciting to read since you don\'t have that comfort zone- it\'s a little edgier.

HP Order of the Phoenix rocks. It took me a long time to get into it, and although I didn\'t really care for a couple of scenes, it was nice to finally get answers to some of the more frustrating questions of the series. I hope you\'ve managed to stay away from spoilers- if I hadn\'t read it as soon as it came out I\'m almost positive I\'d have accidentally found out somethings accidentally, and that would have sucked. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I haven\'t watched tv since before the OotP came out, so no spoilers for me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I\'d rather read than watch tv most of the time anyway. I really liked Goblet of Fire, but after a while it just went on and on and on... What is it they\'re saying about the new book--that is has more words than the first four books combined??? I find that a little hard to believe, looking at GoF, but ya never know. Nothing like a good long story you can keep coming back to though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I\'ll probably go back to the SW books after I\'m done with Drizzt (FR series).

I\'ve also heard anything by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman is a good read (see DragonLance series).

I tend more toward the fantasy than the scifi, but who can\'t love ST and SW??? Well, except for DS9 and STV--never could really get into those. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

<hr /></blockquote><font class=\"post\">

LOL! That\'s exactly how I feel about them too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Phoenix has something like 870 pages, so it\'s longer than Goblet (not sure about actual words though). I know one thing for sure though- it is *LONG*. Seemed like it took half the book to get through the first month. I\'m glad it was long, since I read so damn quickly, but it did seem to drag on and on after a while. There weren\'t really any big revelations for me in it- I\'d mostly already figured it all out. After reading Prisoner of Azkaban, and feeling like a fool for not guessing the ending after all the hints that were dropped, I\'ve started really paying attention to JKR\'s writing. It\'s all foreshadowed if you pay attention. On the other hand, I think I\'d have enjoyed the book a lot more if there were actually a few surprises in it for me. Prisoner is still my favorite of the series so far, and I doubt that will change even through the next two. Anyway, I\'ll shut up about HP before I spoil something for you accidentally! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The link between reading and intelligence is skimpy at best. In my viewing and high school days I noticed that those who read books like Lord Of the Rings, Star Trek, and so on did not read them to gain super human intelligence or insight on much of anything. As much as the sterotype of the nerd has been used it\'s not about being a \"nerd\" what causes being a nerd is dejection from any social group at all. Every kid I knew or saw who read books like those were those who were looking to escape their world by any means, basically they couldn\'t hang with other kids so it was either read a book or stare at the wall, or they could masturbate in self pity. That is my observation on younger adults who are heavily involved in any sort of activity like that.

As for adults I don\'t know I could only guess. I would much rather watch a Star Trek Episode than read one the age of the book hopefully will soon be up, books are no better than TV and those who read them are in it for the entertainment.

So if I read a book about at this stage nonsense science I will be more intelligent? They explain every plan or step they have in Star Trek to you basically with primitive if even fully true science. As for Lord of the Rings well you know /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I *AM* a little tired of getting picked on everytime I demonstate any hint of having a brain. I even requested in my post that no one make any quips about SW or ST and \"nerds\". If you\'ll notice, I\'m not the one who keeps bringing it up. I\'m not really sure who you are trying to debate with, in that last post, about reading and nerds and such, b/c *I* do not classify people by their reading material (or television preferences) either. I\'ll also agree that reading IS another form of entertainment, or escape if you will, but it can also broaden your horizons and stimulate your mind. Did you think I was dissin\' on Star Trek? I grew up watching ST:TNG and reruns of the originals- it was a family affair. So go preach somewhere else.

Personally, I didn\'t think DVK was rude. But the only person it really matters to is Elana, to whom she was directing the comment after being picked on about being a nerd BY Elana. So I seriously doubt Elana has any problem with what DVK said--because Elana has a sense of humor. Now it\'s nice that some of you guys want to jump in and defend people, but I really don\'t think there\'s a need in this case. We\'re all friends here and we\'re teasing. Read back through again if you didn\'t get it the first time.

As for reading material, nobody\'s saying that because we read or what we read is making us smarter or means that we are smarter than anyone else. That\'s all joking around, which I thought was obvious. We just noticed that few or none of us are really into romance novels, so we turned the thread to what we do like to read.

And look, not a smiley in sight. Take it how you want.

You cannot gain more intellegence than what you already have. It\'s what you do with the intellegence that counts. Some people don\'t mind sitting in front of the television for hours on end being passively entertained, others would rather exersize their minds a bit more by reading. Reading also allows you to choose when, where and what you use for entertainment, TV requires you watch what they show you when they choose to show it to you.

There is actually good evidence that reading exercises the brain while TV allows to to atrophy. That\'s because TV is passive where reading is not. It\'s true that some reading is better than others, but anybody who enjoys Dune or some of the higher end writers is certainly no dummy.

Having been a nerd all my life and associated with nerds, I can say from vast experience that your characterization of nerds is a crock based on an utter absense of knowledge. There probably are some anti social people out there who do as you describe but they rarely are all that bright. From my perspective, many people who consider nerd a bad word are ones that live pretty shallow and petty lives in the first place. The nerds and geeks I associate with have incredibally varied and interesting lives.

Frankly, I think Elana and DVK are capable of determining if either was out of line without interference from the rest of us. And they\'ll probably decide that in private, as it should be.

So whenever I watch a movie on my own I start surfing the internet or reading the newspaper at the same time.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I usaully find something else to keep me busy while watching a movie too, they just move so slow. There is a tremndous advantage to being an insomniac, I am up a night when the world is sleeping. Either I can surf the net or read so I don\'t keep the rest the house awake. Plenty of time to read.

I have a lot to read for school, although not so much anymore, since I\'m almost done. But even when I did have a lot to read, I found I could unwind better and not get so burnt out if I read something that had nothing to do with what I was learning before I went to bed. That also helps me sleep better, because I don\'t think about work while I sleep. (I tend to dream about whatever I was reading/doing/talking about right before I fell asleep.)
Some days I only get 2-3 pages in before my eyes shut down on me. Others, I get in a few chapters.

Correct me if I\'m wrong, Tallmacky, but I believe this came from YOU, only a month ago. I wasn\'t trying to be rude to Elana- hence all the smiley faces. It\'s funny how other people post things all the time that are borderline rude (and withOUT smileys) yet I seem to be the only one getting any flack about it.

Next time I\'ll be sure to fill up the page with smileys just for you.

So the original thought was to find a \"romance novel\" that offered insight into female sexual thoughts and was really a hot read (soft+ porn.)

Te idea was that if these patterns were what turned women on sexually, then we men could learn and apply in our own dealings with females.

The only things that stick out to me from romance novels are:
a.)lots of sexual tension beforehand--they don\'t just jump to it
and
b.)a guy who seems to know what he\'s doing.

So no, I don\'t think romance novels would be a good place to do research. As I said before, it seems the hero in most of those books is a jerk with one or two redeeming qualities, and the heroine \'reforms\' him into what she wants. That\'s too much work, IMO. I admit, I don\'t read them, but that\'s the gist from what I\'ve seen of the plots.

Please correct me if I\'m wrong. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I\'ll agree with you on the first two points, SRH, but I\'m definitely not interested in anyone I have to \"reform\", nor do I care to read about them. I\'m not sure what authors you\'ve read/looked at, but stay away from them! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I have a short list of authors that I\'ll read, b/c they can actually write- not just the \"scenes\", they create amazing family dynamics and complicated, *normal* characters. The men in the books I read are never jerks and it\'s always \'what you see is what you get\'- from both parties. I find that what makes these characters so attractive is their personalitites and their confidence. And I try to stay away from those novels where the women are the \'damsel in distress\' type, so that goes for the women and the men- I\'m only interested in stories with strong lead and supporting characters.

As far as Whitehall\'s question, I do think that some men might benefit from reading some of these novels (not just *any* romance novel!), as it might provide some insight into how women think and what we expect and need from a partner. I can post a list of authors and books if anyone is interested in some recommendations.

I\'d settle for some recommendations of sexy-hot books to read. Which ones make you women reach for the BOB?

I must be WAY weird then, in that I will seek out strong, intelligent women.. I want partners (in every sense of the word) who can not only keep up with me, but make me think, push me, and maybe even are more knowledgable about some things than I am. Just this past weekend, I think I spent four hours discussing with my girlfriend why she feels it\'s better to put someone who is innocent in jail than it is to let ten guilty people free. We kicked it around for hours, all without getting dug into the ideological hole. THAT is the kind of thing, for me, that will keep a relationship fresh and interesting for many years.

<hr /></blockquote><font class=\"post\">
We differ on this one.. Personally, outside of precious few shows I am actually interested in, there\'s little redeeming about television. I had a girlfriend back in college who was into television in a major way. It all became mind-numbing to me--So much so that I actually went several years without owning a television. Now, my television exists solely for watching movies.

To the point though, I have no problem classifying people based on entertainment choices. Typically, what one does with their free time is a pretty good indicator of what they\'re like in their core. If someone likes reading about psychology, science, sociology, or other engaging topics, or if they watch television shows like Nova, some of Discovery channel\'s stuff, or current affairs programming, it\'s a pretty good bet they are intelligent and don\'t mind exercising it. If they\'re into reality shows, soap operas, OD\'ing on sports, or mindless sitcoms, it\'s also a pretty good bet that I\'d be fairly bored once I got to know the person.

Well said and I agree on all points, completely. An intellegent woman is the only kind to have beside you. They are so much more fun to be around. (Maybe that\'s why I have such great fantasies about DVK /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

I am sure prime time TV serves some function, just haven\'t figured out what yet.

\"Full Frontal Fiction\" - a selection of erotic short stories compiled by the editors of Nerve. com.

It\'s got some hot stuff here, much better than Penthouse letters, more like what one would find published in \"Libido\" magazine. Authors are male nad female so one can get both worldviews.

I find it so disappointing when I meet an attractive woman and then find the attraction vanish in a flash as soon as she speaks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

On the other hand, sometimes I can be pleasantly surprised...it happened just yesterday. A gal pal introduced me to her friend, Willow, and she was not only incredibly beautiful, but had a great personally, sense of humor and was highly intelligent. The total package. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Could be that I\'ve actually met a girl that is worth some serious effort...it\'s been a while. However, the age difference could be an issue for her...guess I\'ll find out soon enough. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What is weird about wanting to be with an intelligent women? I would hope that the majority of men were interested in what is inside a woman\'s head. I could never be serious about a hot body and pretty face if he couldn\'t hold an intelligent conversation.

Elana that\'s it, that\'s what you remind me of. When a really attractive female also has that wit, charm, timing, and humor as you do(no ass kissing here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif). You take the two halves and make a complete circle. In most cases you get one or the either, a hot body or smart mind. With you it turns out to be equally both, I am sure any guy who has spoken to you over a week knows what I am saying.

I\'ve never really had that problem. Physical beauty is nice and all, and while I certainly don\'t mind it, it\'s not necessarily something that is required for me to be attracted to someone. More important, to me, is what\'s in the mind.. As I always say, a woman\'s got to have it going on upstairs for me to get it going on downstairs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
