When you guys come on this site, are you getting these \"WhenU\" offers and pop-ups??? GRRRR!! They\'re all about mones, penis potions and viagra subs... that\'s why I ask. I put whenu.com on my blocked sites list but they still come up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Norton and MacAffee anitvirus programs both offer pop up blocking software. There are also several good shareware pop-up blockers available here. http://download.com.com (\"http://download.com.com\")

Thanks for the spyware detector thing, it did find the \"WhenU\" spyware on my system and deleted it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I got Ads-Blocker from download.com and registered it, it does a great job of stopping all those ads that come up on my yahoo home page, stops all other types of pop-ups and some banner ads. I like it alot. But... I still have this weird ass thing where a window comes up and asks me if I want to download some program to keep my computer clock adjusted, and I click NO, and I keep finding my computer clock going ahead 4 hrs. I adjust it, and the next time I boot up, this frigging clock is wrong again. WTF!

And yes of course I did the virus scan along time ago, it\'s not that. Also, I have an extra little window indicator on my task bar, you know like a blank window dealie that comes up when I boot up, and there\'s no page to shut down? Does anyone have a clue what all this crap is? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Are you on a high speed connection? I should have asked that first. If so, you NEED some kind of a firewall. It will do many the things listed above except the anti-virus. There are software and hardware firewalls that will completely block all intrusions into your computer, including spyware.

Yes, and yes. DSL and ZoneAlert. Although I am sure my Zone Alert could use upgrading. I figured out which site I always get the time-changing popup at, even though the ad-popper wipes it out just after it pops up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Zone Alert is pretty good but didn\'t stop everything. When I hooked my kids up to the internet from their rooms I put in a D-Link router and hub. It stops everything cold. It also disguises my IP addresses from the web. A much better situation because intruders never get to my computer, they are stopped at the router.

ooops, my bad. I didn\'t reinstall zone alert the last time win 98 pished me off and I reinstalled. WIll re-download zone alert, do another spybot and virus scan, and see if that takes care of it. Can you please explain what a d-router is, are they expensive and where do you get one?

Thanks belgareth! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

D-Link is a brand name. A router controls traffic to and from the internet, it is commonly used in networks where the computers share internet access. The benefit to DSL and cable subscribers is that it can be used to block intrusions from the outside before they get all the way to your computer. Zone Alert and Black Ice Defender are both good software products but have the shortcoming of being on the computer they are protecting. A router adds another layer of security outside of your computer. Firewalls are essentially locked doors. Locks primarily are made to keep honest people honest. I like to put as many locked doors between my property and potential hackers as possible.

Routers cost from $30 and up depending on the brand and where you buy them. Any computer store should have several to choose from.

Belgareth got it all, The only thing I would add is many of these spyware programs need a connection to the internet, zonealarm tells you of anything connecting and you can chose if it connects, if you do not let it connect no pop up (if its spywear) or any spywear.

The reason I like the D-Link router is you can configure it to block any attempts to send from the internet. Spyware never ends up on your machine. Zone Alarm is good and in many cases, I recomend both.

I\'m not really paranoid. Paranoid is when you THINK they are out to get you. I KNOW they are! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

LOL!! Ok thanks guys. Reloaded zone alert, did the spyware and virus scans again, everything is smooth sailing again, no weird clock changing, nor mysterious empty windows on the task bar. That crap is scary. The one that kept changing my clock was called \"ClockSync\" what a pain in the a$$!

I will look into a router next time I\'m at the computer store. Thanks again for the advice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

For F^CK\'s sake. My clock is 4 hrs ahead again and that mysterious blank window is back this morning. I saw that \"Download clock sync\"? pop up come up last night again (not on this site) and today my computer\'s jacked again. I did a search on \"Clock sync bug\" and found other forums discussing this spyware -- http://www.airliners.net/discussions/site_related/read.main/9611/ (\"http://www.airliners.net/discussions/site_related/read.main/9611/\") and that they used \'Ad Aware 6.0\' to combat it.

So I\'m downloading again.... sheees.

if you are on AOL make sure your buddy list is set to allow only your buddies to IM you. If it\'s set to allow anyone to IM you, the pop-ups have a good way in.
