Has anyone had any negative experiences with Splenda?
I just bought some good-tasting Atkins brand shake mix, and it\'s sweetened with sucralose. I just
consumed some and so far I feel fine, but it apparently makes some people violently ill.
I figure that since millions of people are on the Atkins diet, and quite a few of them buy the official Atkins
products, I would have heard if there were anything really seriously wrong.

Splenda is garbage, use Stevia it\'s all natural and it\'s like 100 times sweeter than sugar.

I use about six packets of Splenda a day, in coffee, and I feel fine. It\'s never given me any problems. I\'ve done those shakes, too, and they\'re fine - I like them very much.

I think the problem comes when you try to come off the splenda, i\'ve read of about withdrawls and other problems.

Aspartame and sucralose are not the same things. Nutrasweet is not the same thing as Splenda. Dr.Atkins specifically recommends Splenda. He does not recommend Nutrasweet (aspartame).

Splenda gives me headaches and GI problems. Severity depends on how much splenda I consume. At low amounts, I\'ll get a mild headache and some gas. At higher amounts, I\'ll get a headache bad enough to put me in bed & terrible diarrhea.

When I first started using spenda, it wasn\'t a problem. But after starting to use quite a bit in alot of different foods, it was like my body started to reject it. Kind of like the way some people will develop an allergy to something only after being exposed to it for a while.

Gotta follow up on my own post. It\'s been a few hours since I consumed the Atkins product. No reactions either way. I had a slight headache beforehand that\'s actually gotten better, but it probably would\'ve done so anyway.

I\'ll probably not be using the Atkins shake mix forever--it\'s just that the unsweetened low-carb whey products taste like library paste that\'s been sitting around in a mildewy basement since 1937. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Hopefully I won\'t suffer any negative effects from using Splenda for only a short time.

So, in that case you\'ve gone on and off Splenda without ill effects?

Isn\'t sucralose a sugar alcohol?
On the assumption that it is, then it\'s a sugar that your body\'s cells can\'t use for energy, so it just goes on through and out of your system. Problem is that it can cause bad gas and diarrhea if you have more than recommended. Example, if I eat something with a sugar alcohol in it, and eat the recommended serving or less, I\'m fine. Say the serving size is two of something. If I eat three, then it\'s going to tear up my stomach for the next several hours. But I\'ve never heard about it being harmful, at least at recommended amounts.
It also a good way to keep you from going overboard on junk food if you\'ve got PMS and have junk food cravings. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

OTOH, if you need a good quick colon cleansing... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The atkins bars (the choclate peanut butter ones) are the shizznit. I mean it. the best bar i have ever had. and I have tried a lot of different bars. meso tech(even with 20 grams of sugar per bar the atkins bar still has them beat on taste), met-rx protein plus, pure protein, lee labrabra bars, etc. atkins products are pretty damn good IMO.

Well just use a resonable amount of splenda and I think you will be fine. But stay away from sugar alcohols. I ate some carbolite gummy bears once (I hate 2 servings) and it gave me the runny sh_ts like mexican water.

Yes, I\'ve gone on and off Splenda with no ill effects whatsoever. It doesn\'t bother me. I have about six packets a day, in coffee, and I\'m fine. Sometimes I run out and it will be a few days before I go to the grocery store again, so I\'ll use sugar or Nutrasweet, because I still have about half a box of Nutrasweet. I don\'t suffer any ill effects at all from any of it.

Sucralose is chlorinated sucrose. In other words, ordinary table sugar with a chlorine molecule added so that the body can\'t digest it.

About it passing through the body, Splenda was approved by the FDA on the premise that it was not absorbed by the body. However, several studies have shown it actually is absorbed. That\'s likely why all the side effects caused by sucralose are not GI-tract related.

On a different note, I\'m not sure why you think sugar alcohol is noncaloric. It has the same caloric value as other carbs, it just is metabolized much differently.

This is the best. The FDA, with probably a lot of pressure from the sugar, aspartame, sucralose industries, has made it illegal to call this a sweetener. If you go to health food store, you will not see \"sugar substitute\" anywhere on the label of Stevia. Sad. It could replace all the chemical crap out there.

So far, I haven\'t had any ill effects either, except for diarrhea... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Now that I\'ve begun exercising in earnest, I\'ll probably stay on the Atkins diet for only as long as it
takes to get into shape, and not much longer than that. The Splenda tastes good enough that I think
I\'ll be able to keep with the program.

That\'s not such a bad side effect, on Atkins, anyway. That diet tends to constipate a lot of people.

Read this and then decide:

I actually know one of the people who was on the certifying committee for Sucralose and she had not seen the rat studies!

The pure white processed version of stevia, which is most like sugar, lasts absolutely forever, so it is dirt cheap, and is great stuff. There are three-four other natural products out there, but I forget what they are (sorbitol is one). Maltodextrin is another, So we have many choices. I think ideal is to blend all the natural products, then add just enough fructose to give it authenticity. You can store a batch of this.
