I heard a BBC report at the end of april 2002, discussing a melon that is grown ( i can\'t remember where because the bbc is only on during my sleeping hours--I think southern asia or africa) that has pheromone type qualities. The local boys put a small melon in there pockets when going on walks with girls. And the local folks use the melon as a type of potpurri in their homes. The melons last from 1-2 months with very strong pleasant smells circulating around the house. Any one hear this BBC story? or know what the hell I am talking about, I would love to grow these melons. I contacted the BBC and they are too busy to help with my request because I don\'t have a specific time for the program and a name -- well hell I was drunk and sleeping and the program was on between 3-5am!

Did these melons have a spiney outside covering. Only things that I can think of is the Durian fruit grown in Malaysia. I believe that they are reported to be a aphorodisiac, but a lot of people are repelled by the smell.

bjf,

The Durian is fairly large

so I doubt anyone would carry one around in their pocket. Nor would a Durian qualify in any way to act as a

"potpourri".

In the countries where the Durian is popular most hotels have "No Durians" regulations since

they're so foul smelling entire floors of the hotel need to be fumigated when one is smuggled in and cut open.

There are signs with a picture of a Durian on it covered by the big red circle with the line through it!!! ;)

My

guess is that we're talking about another fruit altogether here.

Oscar :)

I don't know about melons.

But I know for a fact that Celery contains androsterone. A distilation, condensation process may be possible to

create a concentrated essential oil.

Here

is a vague image on what the distillation setup should look like:

bjf,

I did a search for "pocket

melons" and came up with the "Plum Granny" also called 'Queen Anne's Pocket Melons" and "Victorian Pocket Melons".

They had a fragrance which when carried in one's pocket combatted bodily odor. At least one reference implied that

they were mostly used to combat feminine body odors, so maybe they're not the ones mentioned in the first post

above. No mention of Africa or Asia as their source either.

Hmmm. Einstein may be

right.

From skinbiology.com

"Plants use chemicals to attract bees and other pollinators to their

flowers. Some plant pheromones have similar chemistry to animal pheromones. Musk is a strong pheromone from musk

deer, musk ducks, musky moles, muskrats, musk ox and musk beetles. But similar pheromones exist in musk melons, musk

hyacinths, musk cherries, musk thistle, musk rose, musk plums and musk wood. "

The fact that a melon stinks

wouldn't necessarily count against it in the world of attraction!
