Okay, here is a possibly

useless alternative suggestion. I base it on something which happened a couple of years ago, before I started

learning about body language and pheromones. This is one of those "GOD IF I HAD ONLY KNOWN!" kind of stories.

Okay, I was in an accident about three years ago. Wasn't my fault, but the way my car ended up, the cop insisted

he had to give me a ticket along with two other drivers. Well, I was living in Texas at the time, but this will

apply in several other states. It turns out that you can take a defensive driving course something like once every

ten years and get a ticket cleared. You HAVE to arrange it with the court BEFORE you go to traffic court (call your

local court to see what the rules are).

The class lasts six hours. It's long, it's boring. A lot of people

opt to take it over the Internet.

DON'T DO THAT!

Let me repeat myself: DON'T DO THAT!

Why? Okay, here

is the story.

I took the six-hour class. Signed up for a local "comedy club" version of the class. They

claimed they would make the six hours go faster with jokes. Well, the humor wasn't all that much. But the

Vietnamese girl who sat next to me -- WHOA! What a hottie!

She came into the room after most of us were seated.

There were only a few open seats left. There must have been 20-30 guys in there. The place was packed, standing

room only. So, any woman who walked into that room was instantly hit by a LOT of pheromones and had her choice of

men to flirt with.

This girl came up to the front of the class and sat down next to me.

In fact, she almost

sat ON me. Now, this was BEFORE I started using pheromones. I was wearing blue jeans, a golf shirt (maybe a

t-shirt), and running shoes. Nothing fancy.

She struck up a conversation with me before the class and during

the breaks. I sensed she was interested but I didn't feel like it would be appropriate to suggest anything (I

forget why -- I was probably too new to the area or something).

When it came time for lunch, the girl had been

sitting with her hip against mine for almost an hour. I mean, there was as much full physical contact between us as

she could manage to make. She would go out of her way to turn so her back would rub up against me. Her arms all

but laid across mine.

At lunch, I asked a few people if they could recommend a cheap fast-food spot close by.

She recommended Burger King. I asked if she would be going there and she said, "No". I knew right there I had

blown an opportunity.

Wasn't really looking for an opportunity, mind you. I was just there to get the class

out of the way. I should have suggested we have lunch together, so I could get to know her better. But I didn't.

And I regretted NOT taking that step.

So, the moral of the story: if you have a traffic ticket, USE it to your

advantage. If you are in a state that lets you take that dumb class, then find a "comedy club" class and wear your

best clothes and wear your pheromones and hope for the best.

The class will probably be hot, crowded, long, and

boring. Get there early and try to get a good seat. Let the women see you.

At the very least, you should get a

discount on your insurance AND you may get out of a ticket. At best, you'll meet Miss Right, or at least Miss

Right Now.

That's not entirely true. Actually, most people just pay their fine...my dad always fights...and

thanks for the help guys. i just

want to say that i'm not a bad driver. only 1 accident was deemed my fault by the cops. tickets are all about

getting revenue, they're not about safety at all. doing 85 in the fast lane with while other cars are doing 85 is

Having wallked away from

That said, if you go to court, be sure to concentrate on using

And every time I went to court, hoping the

Radar detectors are illegal... (in CA and many other states, at least)

That said,

European vehicles do 100 easy, and they have less accidents than the US...you could attribute that to the roads or

belgareth

A lot depends on the drivers.

Depending on where you are, road manners vary tremendously. Here in the Dallas area they have some of the worst

manners I've ever seen resulting in a greater percentage of the drivers being in accidents than other places with

far more traffic. Driving with the flow of traffic and not driving aggressively would help prevent a lot of bad

wrecks.

i've been to cali this summer. the traffic is so heavy there, you can't even speed

Last I heard Radar detectors are legal in CA. You won't be safe from laser

with a radar detector. You'll need a jammer.

You can use radar detectors

though. The Escort or the bel combo would be nice. Laser signal is easily disrupted, so laser jammers are good.

They are probably illegial in some places but it's just disrupting light.

Radar detectors are useless in CA. After all, radar is not used in CA to catch people speeding. ;) My

You beat me to it Mtnjim. I live right on the Az/Ca border and was going

to say that they have used radar for several years on the state highways in Ca but have just recently started using

them on the Interstate freeways. I noticed this spring though, that they still have planes follow I8 in your neck of

I'm reminded of the TV show, CHIPS, where they pull over some guy for speeding and he gets out

of his car and pops open a hubcap, complaining that the balled up foil inside was suppose to jam radar. :D He was

then told that they didn't use radar in that state.

California driving scares me. A couple of years ago I

was driving North from San Diego to Vista in evening rush hour traffic. I saw a flash of light in my rearview mirror

and saw a couple of motorcycle fools on cafe racers, riding wheelies down the freeway! I was glad when they passed

:thumbsup:Well, that explains it. I haven't been to CA in a year, and when I was there and every year I've

been there, they (on the freeway) had to catch you speeding by other means. I know because one of the tickets my

dad beat was one where the police officer was doing 85 to catch up to my dad (the police car was far behind him

driving, not on the side of the road), so he argued that the officer didn't leave enough time to slow down and

determine his actual speed.

For the record, if you get a ticket for speeding in CA off of the freeway, you're

an idiot. The speed limit off the freeway is like 45 in most places around where my family lives (I compare that to

where I lived in PA with hills and crappy roads where it was 35 most places and 45 zones were like heaven). If you

go over that in an atmosphere like that (lights every few hundred yards, people turning everywhere, cars pulling in

and out of commercial areas, etc.), you're just asking for trouble, anyway.

In conclusion, I'm wrong...I

don't keep up on current events, apparently. ;)

As for the intergenerational lecture rant...The unfortunate fact is not everyone has the same motor

skills, hand to eye coordination, response time, spatial perception etc...so they have designed the traffic laws to

take into account a below average level of these skill sets...so little old ladies & men can drive as well budding

Michael Shumacher's...

Same with the DUI or DWI laws...some people can probably drive fine on 2 beers,

others experience impairment where they should'nt be behind the wheel. But they cant make DWI laws that differ

from one person to another...

Judging from TRock's Tetris scores I'm sure his hand to eye coordination &

spatial perception are very high...I'm sure he could easily drive at race car speeds, but unfortunately most people

on the roads are nowhere near that skill level & on top of that are eating a Big Mac & talking on the phone...

Since we're in Open Discussion now...

I am one of those morons. I'm

driving in the car pool lane (no idea where I'm going)...I'm not even sure if I have my license yet or just my

"Thanks for telling me now, Dad!!!"

"We can make it. Go over now."

"We're next to a double-white line! We're in the car pool

lane!"

"You can make it! Go!"

*Switch lanes*

"Okay...wait a second...okay, now!"

*Switch lanes*

"Okay...wait...go! Wait, don't go! There's a guy there. Okay...now! GO, GO, GO!"

*Switch lanes*

"Go

again, you're good!"

*Switch lanes*

The exit's right there...I'm one lane away, and the median thing is

coming up...I'm running out of room...I try to change lanes so we all don't die.

"Bud, you can't move over

yet...there's a guy right next to you!"

"Dude, move! We're all going to crash if you don't! Doesn't he see

I'm about to crash if he doesn't speed up or slow down or something!?!?!"

I slow down and pull in behind the

guy...just as the end of the median-like thing (slashing lines) turned into a wall...I'm so glad that a. I didn't

get arrested and b. I'm still alive.

However, I will never forget the time I crossed five lanes in less than a

mile in heavy afternoon CA freeway traffic with a mere driver's permit.

After this incident, I never drive

without knowing where I'm going first and receiving continual updates as to directions. That and I've learned

never to trust my dad with anything... ...but that comes from years of experience. ;)

Thinking more about

the radar detector controversy this morning on the way to work. The fact that some states ban them and companies

like Geico campaign to make them illegal across the country.

There are detectors now that can alert the

driver to road hazards ahead, such as construction zones and emergency vehicles. I don't know how many counties,

states, whatever the jurisdiction is that would have to incorporate the beacons into their equipment for the

detectors to receive them actually use the technology, but I think that it's not a bad idea.

Truely, for an old fart, my motor skills and

You have to remember that at least 1/2 of the drivers (certainly the above average members of this forum, just other

In general? I

don't think so.
In certain psychological studies, people are more likely to overestimate their abilities

when comparing themselves to the general population. In other words, when comparing things such as driving ability,

intelligence, etc., people are more likely to see themselves as "above average" compared to the rest of the

population. I can't be more specific as I am unsure of the exact types of questions that create such responses.

This does not include such questions as, "How good are you at pool?" where it could be anyone's guess as to

over or underestimation with no point of comparison.

It's more of a psychological joke than anything.

"75% of the population is 'above average'." Anyone who knows statistics should see that this is impossible.

psychological studies, people are more likely to overestimate their abilities when comparing themselves to the

general population.

http://www.apa.org/journals/psp/psp7761121.html is one such

study. I love the quote in the abstract: "Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate

choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it." Another choice one:

"Paradoxically, improving the skills of participants, and thus increasing their metacognitive competence, helped

them recognize the limitations of their abilities." Perhaps ignorance *is* bliss! :)

When I was learning to drive I

was told that almost invariably the worst drivers are the ones who claimed to be good drivers or experts. Since then

I have seen that proven true. Those who claim they are safe drivers are the ones who get into and cause accidents

and get tickets. The ones who are cautious, recognize the limits of themselves and their cars and allow substantial

margin for error are the ones who never seem to have problems. Since I have an aversion to seeing my own blood, I

try hard to follow that rule.
