Hi

guys,

I am assembling equipment for my hobby-perfumery lab and have a question about Disposable Pasteur

Pipettes:

Do essential oils affect pipettes made of Polyeten?
(If so, must I use pipettes of

glass?)

Could anyone shed a light on pipettes with a cotton "stopper"? How do I use them to suck up essential

oils into the pipette? The disposable polyeten pipettes have a integrated bulb, but the glass ones don't.

Im no chemist, but while I

took Chemistry in my undergraduate I prefered the glass pipettes. Oil will be a pain to get out of any pipette made

of any material, so it will take quite some rinsing. However, the seperate bulb on the glass pipettes allows for

more flexibility (in my opinion)

In chemistry in high

school (1970s), we didn't have squeeze bulbs for our pipettes. We would just suck on the end to draw the desired

amount of fluid into the pipette, then place our finger over the top so the solution wouldn't spill out until we

were ready to release it. I saw a chemist on TV just the other day using this technique, which surprised me as I

thought it wasn't done anymore due to safety concerns.

I personally use glass for

everything I possibly can in perfuming. Otherwise you're googling for information on materials and solvents all

day.
