What about the part when the

two guys dive in through a window. The movie wasn't very well-made, the "zombie" humans had no motivation to kill

The ending is

wide-open. We don't know what happens after the parade. At the very, very least, Jimmy has to live with

it.

You're right, though. It does appear that Jimmy has actually been rewarded for his behavior (with

extra doses of sympathy, understanding and even affection, courtesy of his wife) and that is a little hard to choke

down.

On the other hand, is the whole thing really his--or anybody's--fault?

What I found disconcerting was that Annabeth Markum (Jimmy's wife) not only accepts her husband's

blockheaded behavior, but showers him with extra affection and understanding over the whole thing. Irony makes fer

great drama, don't it?

“Dirty Pretty Things” is out on

video. A realistic drama, with surreal undertones, about immigrants trying to survive London’s wicked underside.

Great story. Great acting and perfect casting. Audry Tatou (star of “Amilee”) plays and innocent Turkish girl that

everybody tries to exploit. Sergi Lopez (costar of “My Friend Harry”) plays an excellent bad guy. Some British actor

I’ve never seen before plays a Nigerian doctor running away from his past.
Shocking ending and one of the

greatest lines I’ve ever heard in a movie:
“Why haven’t I seen you people before?”
“You never see us.

We’re the people that drive your cabs, clean your rooms, and suck your c@#$.”

The documentary Control

Room was an excellent, honest film about truth, honesty, and balance in war journalism; as well as the battle

for these goods, in context of the Iraq war.

A lot of people are comparing it to Fahrenheit 9/11; and

for a good reason, due to the similarity in subject matter. The pacing and filmmaking was perhaps a little better in

Control Room; although 9/11 was perhaps slightly more ambitious and difficult.

Although staunch

conservatives are sure to dislike the film, since conservatism is partly a mental trait and cognitive habit;

independent-minded lovers of free information should find much reason to admire it.

Instead of

going out with my friends tonight. My little girl and I were bonding spending some quality time tonight insted! so

we had pop corn and rootbeer (her fave drink) we were watching *13 going on 30* one of the cuttest movies

ever. Definitely a Chick's movie as some guys might say (haha) we really liked it. She's (my little girl) growing

so fast makes me sad in a way because to me that is exactly what she will always be ( my little girl no matter what

age she is) and it was cute having her laugh with me of some of the scenes in the movie. Her laugh makes me feel

happy is such a great feeling she's one happy little girl and that makes me feel good.

She acts so much like me some times it's funny but she has her own personality and she's very

unique but I find it so amazing to see some of me in her. She likes me to tuck her in and read her a bed time-story

every night until she falls asleep and even though there's times I'm not in the mood I always do.. Tonight while

we were watching this movie it made me realized those moments are actually the best moments of her life as well as

mine because once the time is gone we can't get it back! and having those sweet short memories of us spending time

together, reading her a story, tucking her in at night, kissing her forehead and saying I love you & hearing her

sweet voice saying I love you to Mommy are some of the best moments in my life and those sweet memories are captured

in my heart as well in my mind until the day I die... What a wonderfull feeling she gives me, what a wonderful thing

is to be a Mommy of such a loving little girl.

Yeah I guess this movie did a little

more to me because I used to be in such rush to grow up but once I got there I wish I was young all over again and

to see my kid rushing to grow up too sort of makes me sad because I wish she wouldn't.. I wish she could stay the

age she is now and be with me forever... (okay Im crying now..) Sorry I'm a bit emotional tonight and I think it's

showing.. But those who are parents can relate to what I'm rumbling about..
BTW she is

sleeping with me tonight and I enjoy this more than her to tell you the truth! although she basically takes the

whole bed and I end up at the edge I enjoy her little arms hugging me during the night. But this only happens every

once in a while because if we make this a habit than is hard to get her back in her bedroom again and I need my

privacy too. Anyway, I will stop here now I just had an emotional moment. My next movie is Saving Private Ryan. Not

sure if I really want to start watching this tonight.. I'm a cry Baby and not ashame to admit it and as much as I

suffer watching movies like those I really enjoy them a lot! I watched Man Of Honor for the 1st time sometime last

week and OMG awesome Movie!! And NOOO I didn't drop a tear in this movie!,,,, (okay I'm lying) I couln't stop my

tears from falling...
Hugs to you all

WoW Sky Captain and the World of

Tomorrow will become a classic. The whole retro look of the film is amazing, it felt like I was watching a actual

movie from the 30s combined with giant robots, Ray Guns, and a Flash Gordon type hero. To those that don't know

this movie it is entirely computer-generated only the actors are real. The dialogue and acting could have been

better but I can see they were trying to go for a comic-book serial. This is one of those movies you have to see on

the big screen so don't wait till DVD, I highly recommend it.

“Shawn of the Dead”: There’s some

social satire, but mostly it’s a verry well done play on the tension/frustration you feel while watching stupid

people try to get away from mindless, slow moving zombies.
Warning! This is not a straight up comedy. There’s a

few shocks, lots of gore and way more suspense than “Resident Evil”.

I watched What The Bleep Do We Know? last night. Great message (dead on, if watered-down to

Aquafina). Cheesy packaging.

Anyone else see it?Saw it three times: Cheezy elements, and stuff I'd

heard before; but at the time I felt good leaving the theater. I liked it a lot. The idea that you create your own

reality (here ideas dovetailed with Matrix a bit) is empowering.

It was filmed right here, so I reconized many

of the places in the film. It also premiered here, so I saw it a long while ago.

It did so well, it stayed

showing at the same old theater (the one pictured in the film) for months, at two shows a day.

The film has

generated a lot of critical flack in the local press; from charges of "hippie bullshit," (Ramtha, etc.) to

controversy about some neocon religious cult that the filmmakers are involved with. For example:

http://www.wweek.com/story.php?story=5860

Ironically, the

neocon idea is that, since you create your own reality, where you are is your own damn fault: You're on your

own, and don't need the government's help! The "haves" deserve to have, and the "nots" don't.

This

underscores that the insight behind the film is a dangerous idea -- that, even if true, the "general

population of idiot monkeys" might not be ready for it. Personal responsibility is highly threatening to us, and in

fact is somewhat dangerous.

This is probably the one characteristic that keeps religion and its mindset from

evolving, to keep pace with reason and civilization. After all, if God is within each of us, rather than in the

Bible, what is to prevent everyone from making their own rules? Could everything become "permissable"? Wouldn't

that mean the crumbling of all sacred and secure things? This is to say nothing of the individual's power to

create.

It is impossible to overestimate the amount of fear that middle America feels at the half-witted

contemplation of these ideas.

The problem is, that for our fundamental ideas and beliefs about the universe to

not evolve is way more dangerous and threatening! The old set of ideas is killing us and our planet.

I

personally wanted them to emphasize the science more, and the "new-aginess" less. I thought they hurt their own

"case" unnecessarily with it. But the controversy that came out later suggested that the filmmakers may have had

another agenda.

But it was a huge popular success. I'm glad you got to see it. I had recommended the film to

others.

belgareth

Unfortunately,

the ability to make one's own rules comes with a level of personal responsibility that many people are just plum

Interesting and a bit of synchronicity for me to read this post

this morning. At a presentation in Phoenix last November, my meditation teacher recommended this film. I had never

heard of it before and thought there was little chance that it would play in my town. I just checked my email and

from one of the Yahoo groups I belong to, I got notice tonight that the film will be playing in a small California

community just across the Colorado River from my town on April 15th. Admission is only $5, cheaper than the theatres

in this town.

Knowing that the town doesn't have a theatre of it's own, I suspect that it will be shown in

a church. Signs point to go though, and if I get there early, "good eats" will be available for only $5

more.

As a person who believes we do create our reality but often forgets to put it in practice (especially

the past few weeks), I need all the reminders I can get. I am writing down the date on my calendar as soon as I post

this.

Thanks for mentioning the film today Holmes. And thanks DrSmellThis, for your take on the picture.

After some ambivalence due

to the venue it was showing at (a 1950s era trailer park), I saw it tonight. It did have the feeling of "Afterschool

Special" meets "Donald Duck in Mathamagic Land" in places, but I liked it. I think it's worth watching several

times, I think I'll try to find a used copy on Amazon.

Hoping that there might be women of interest there, I

put on three dabs of Pheros/NPA 3:1 and two sprays of Chikara. I was not surprised to find though, that the crowd

was closer to my parents' age than mine. Though I had my usual pre-event jitters, I'm happy to report I was not

self-conscious at all after my initial entry.

I think the movie was something I needed to see, especially due

to the coincidence of seeing Holmes' post about the same day it was announced it was to be shown in my area. I have

been studying "Science of Mind" for several years but have problem puting it into practice. The old wriring is hard

to change. I have seen evidence of the movie's message in real life but still revert to my old negative

ways.

Interestingly, the main actress in the movie kept seeing weird things. On the drive back home, I was on

my town's main drag, a 4 lane street with a turning lane. I saw some guy run into the street from the opposite side

and then realized that I had just passed a guy holding a beer sitting in a shopping cart in the turning lane of the

road. In the rearview mirror, I saw the guy on foot push the other guy back into a motel parking lot. I wonder what

that means... (Other than it must be a good party they're having.) :)

http://www.ramtha.com/

That's something that concerned me when I

realized who the particular woiman was. Too much negative press in the 1980s/90s has influenced my opinion about

him/her. But I'm keeping an open mind as my meditation teacher has some far out claims and I also enjoy listening

to another channeler's tapes, Abraham-Hicks.

The movie was first recommended to me by my meditation

teacher. The people who attended last night were strangers to me (though I did recognize one guy from work), but I

think they were mainly Science of Mind people, which is basically a kind of positive thinking.

Kind of funny

that it is Ramtha propaganda as I was joking before I saw it that I was going to be indoctrinated into another cult

at the movie.

The discussion at IMDB about the movie is really heated. I'm glad I waited until after I saw

the movie to look it up there. I think the main point of the movie isn't some of the pseudo science that they

feature, but to get you thinking about how the way you look at the world shapes your experiences.

"There is

no good or bad but thinking makes it so." - Shakespeare

"As a man thinketh in his heart so is he." - James

Allen

(Again, something I realize but have much difficulty puting into practice.)

After posting here

Just saw "The

Producers." I think it's better than the original, but no "Kung Fu Hustle." :) As for musicals, I think Chicago was

better, though Producers has its moments.

Uma Thurman has some long legs! I never noticed before. That must

be why she was barefoot dancing with Travolta in "Pulp Fiction." I bet she's taller than he is. I never realized

before how tall she actually is.

The movie was fun and the songs catchy though. I think the scene at the gay

director's house was the funniest. And I had a problem at first with Matthew Broderick freaking out in the first

scene. It seemed like he was trying too hard to channel Gene Wilder's performance in the original film there.

A bit of trivia: In the original movie, when they sang "Springtime for Hitler," there's a line, "don't be

stupid, be a smarty, come and join the Nazi party." That's was Mel Brook's voice, though he never appeared on

screen. They use his voice again for that line in the musical version too.

Funny, when I worked at a movie

theatre, I always resented having to work on Christmas day. This is the second Christmas that I've gone to see a

matinee. Last year it was that Steve Zizou movie. I've mainly gone, besides wanting to see the shows, to get out of

the house full of too many relatives.

This one's several

years old, but I saw for the first time a couple of months ago at the dentist's office. He has these glasses with

little LCD screens in them so you can watch DVDs to distract you from what he's doing in your mouth.

Anyway,

the movie's "A Knight's Tale." From the moment I saw the audience at the joust singing, "We Will Rock You," I was

hooked. I didn't get to see the whole thing, so I went out and bought the director's cut that afternoon.

Disappointed that it didn't have the funny commentary soundtrack by the director and one of the actors, I then

ordered a used copy of the original version off of Amazon.com.

The movie got some bad reviews from people

thinking it was going to be a period piece. But I feel the use of modern rock "classics" and behavior in the movie

worked to it's advantage. I think besides the jousting action, my favorite scene is the banquet, where they start

to dance a Minuet type of dance and it merges into everyone getting down to David Bowie singing "Golden Years."

It's based on a true story of what happened after the massacre of 11 Israelie atheletes back in the 1972 Olympics.

Yeah, I've heard positive things about Mol's handling of the role, how she

really brought to life the person behind the persona, how she captured Page's innocence and vulnerability, how she

really was Bettie, etc. I'm kinda relieved that they didn't choose a higher-profile actress for this -

Been looking forward to this one. Opened in San

Diego yesterday, so I'll be able to catch it there in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, the "Not Smoking" movie will

still be there too. These kind of movies play in the "art houses," the nearest of which to my motel is in a gay

neighborhood. Within walking distance from the motel though, if I want to hike about a mile up a steep canyon road.

I saw "Shopgirl" at that neighborhood's theatre last year. Before the show, they showed a preview for some kind of

movie about two shirtless cowboys who fall in love on a fishing trip. I wanted to laugh out loud as I thought it

looked like a very bad movie and didn't even know they made films like that. Little did I know at the time that

"Brokeback Mountain" was a mainstream movie that would get a lot of publicity. :run:

Back to

Bettie Page, when she first started to regain popularity in the 1980s, I found there was some kind of primal

attraction to her, as if I had seen her somewhere before. I think they were still printing her pictures long after

she retired from the scene, in those cheap mature joke mags that I bought as a pre-teen in the early 1970s.

at what you do is more important than doing good. And Sam Eliot’s great line, “I was good at killing Viet Cong, but

I didn’t try to make a living out of it.”) Or is it a convenient rationalization for our culture’s ethical

breakdown? (eg. Since when did paying the mortgage become a valid moral argument?)
Either way, the true face of

evil is portrayed quite graphically, for anyone that cares to see it.

Anyway... Since I’m going on and on

about movies, here’s some DVD recommendations:
“Serenity” and “Secuestro Express” are a couple of low

budget movies that make their high-budget parallels (“Star Wars” and “Man on Fire”) seem wimpy by comparison.

“Serenity” is a sci-fi/action movie with very compelling characters and lots of clever twists. Plus it portrays the

classic theme of Rebels vs. Empire with a good sense of humor and without a lot of heavy handed moralizing.
“Man

on Fire” was a good movie, but “Secuestro Express” handles the topic of Latin American abductions with the kind of

realism that makes your palms sweaty. (If you thought “Man on Fire” was suspenseful, you’re going to need some Xanax

for “Secuestro Express”.) There’s no heroes to save the day and the villains aren’t caricatures of Evil. They’re

desperate people at the end of their ropes and you never know when they’re going to go off. (Not to mention, Mia

Maestro is ravishing.)

Last, but not least, “Dot the I” has got to be one of my favorite movies of all

time. I didn’t catch it at the theaters because it seemed like just another love triangle.
There is a love

triangle. But, right from the start, you get the sense that something menacing is going on.
You pretty much have

to see it twice to appreciate what the screen-writer is doing. The first time around he basically f**ks with your

mind and toys with your emotions. The second time around you realize how the real story is being told in the margins

of what you first thought the story was about.

Both, I'm afraid.

That "paying

payments.

Serenity was extraordinary - in every way. Whedon outdid himself, IMO. Here's hoping

Just finished a foriegn language DVD called Lagaan: Once Upon

A Time In India (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169102/). I think I must have been Indian in at least one of my past lives. I've been attracted to

their music since I heard George Harrison's album, "Wonderwall Music," and their images since a friend in high

school gave me a copy of the Baghavad Ghita that he bought off a Hare Krishna follower in an airport in the 1970s.

My meditation teacher once told a group I was in that were were all monks at one time who had taken vows of poverty.

With my financial situation, I believe it. And with my relationship history, I think there was a vow of celibacy

that I'm still burning off karma for too.

Anyway, I've been interested in seeing some Bollywood movies but

not knowing Hindi, was hesitant to pick one at random. "Bride and Prejudice" was my first one, which was by the

director of "Bend it like Beckham" and is all in English.

Lagaan is set in drought stricken India in 1893.

The arrogant British captain in charge of the area tells the villagers that they have to pay double tax (lagaan)

since he had let them slide with just half the tax the year before. The villagers protest and he decides that if

they beat the British soldiers in cricket that they won't have to pay tax for three years. If they lose, they owe

triple tax.

The main drawback with the movie is it's almost four hours long. The story really drew me

in though, rooting for the motley bunch of villagers and hating the priviledged frat boy like British team,

especially the captain. The photography is great and so is the soundtrack. Lots of dramatic drumming.

Other

than the legnth, the other thing that might put viewers off is that it's mainly in Hindi, though the Brits speak

English to each other. But to me, subtitles help me pay more attention to the film. I find that when watching movies

at home, I often start to lose attention and just half listen, while I surf the web or do other things. Can't do

that when you have to read to understand the dialogue.

I'm not one for sports movies and the last 1.75 hours

or so of this one is the cricket match. But I had never watched cricket before so that was interesting, and like I

said, the drama (and also the unrequited love of the captain's sister toward the main Indian character) drew me in.

My favorite character though, was Guran, who reminded me of Rupert from "Survivor."

I wanted to add,

that the scene where the whole willage gasped when the main protaganist touched an "untouchable" reminded me of "The

Beverly Hillibillies." A con man under the guise of a guru had his hooks in Mrs. Drysdale to get her money. She was

going on a trip to India with him and he told her that while there, she would touch an untouchable. Whe Mrs.

Drysdale said she didn't want to touch one, he told ther that would cost extra as "they're very touchy." :)

Dick adaptations include Minority Report and Blade Runner. Also, Scanner Darkly is directed by my favorite director,

Richard Linklater (known for Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Waking Life)

Scanner Darkly

will also employ the same rotoscoping techniques of Waking Life, which helped make that movie one of my all-time

One scary good movie!

"The Devil Wears Prada" wasn't bad

and had some decent messages for young women.

"Serenity" was better than the latest Star Wars franchise but

Check out the director featurette on

the making of the movie. That says it all. He says his goal is to make movies with no clear explanation and

everybody writes his/her own plot. Sort of a "Roarshock Movie" (you know, where you look at an ink blot and figure

Haven't seen that one yet,

Swinger, but it's been on my list.

On a completely different note, I just saw this one called The

Secret. It's based on the teachings/writings of Jerry and Esther Hicks. The concensus seemed to be, "see this

movie; it'll change your life!" So I checked it out.

My concensus: cringeworthy production - similar

in oh-so-many ways to What The Bleep... Very "Anthony Robbins Infomerical" at times (I repeatedly caught

myself wondering what they were selling). But I'm still on the fence about the validity of the message itself. I

have seen the process in action (mostly in other people's lives), but I'm still fighting the impulse to write it

all off as a either hidden opportunism or airy-fairy bullshit (as the universe is feeling pretty random to me these

days).

Doc would be a great one to talk to about this particular movie, but I'd also love to know what

anyone else thinks. Anyone? Anyone? Bruce? :D

Holmes,

Just noticed your post

about the Secret. I watched it a few months back and my 2 cents says all that stuff is aboslutely for real and a

distant cousin to the disciplines that I am working with now, but (very big but in fact) my gut says those guys are

playing with a fire they have very little clue about. It's really a sort or religion based on the accumulation of

wealth. Check it out, most of those guys are bragging about how much money they got from the "secret." One guy is

even bragging about his 4million dollar house and in the same sentence his wife that "you would kill for." Um....

exqueeze me? If you cut that stuff out (which is 80% of the film), it's great. I loved that Texas "miracle man."

He is great. The Doctor tells him "you will be in bed on life support for the rest of your life", and he says

"Yeah? I say I'll be out of here by Christmas." I love that. That's what that is all about. Screw the money

and the $4 million house and supermodel wife. (figuratively speaking of course)
But I can tell you that stuff is

for real. If you believe something strongly enough, you can make it come true. Just depends how strong your mind

is. If you wish for lots of "stuff" and half the rest of the population is starving to death, um... I gotta feeling

there is gonna be a price to pay that those fellas hadn't bargained on.

My 2 1/2 cents.

Pray for Peace; then

go out and make it happen

Glad to hear your thoughts on

this. I agree with just about every point you've made. The emphasis on money/materialism is kind of what turned me

off, too. Likewise, the saving grace (for me) was definitely the miracle man segment.

One of the questions

that keeps haunting me, though: could anybody have done what he did? Or was there something about his makeup,

something in his wiring, that made it easier for him to recover? (Or was it just luck?)

Thanks for the

Your talking about the Law Of

Attraction right ?

I watched The Secret and have read a few books on the premise ..... and have concluded it

must be a crock !!

People starving to death cannot simply "believe" themselves into getting a better life

!!

People desperately in debt gamble their last few bucks away with more "belief" than any living soul .....

and still lose their money .....

I can't help thinking that there are simply winners and losers in life

..... the winners got their by sheer luck and coincidence ..... nothing more, nothing less .....

belgareth
01-27-2007, 08:08 PM
Winning may in part be luck but

a lot of it is making your own luck. You have to believe then go out and make what you believe happen. There is no

luck associated with sitting and hoping something will happen but there is a lot of luck available to those who are

always trying.

.

I think anybody could have done that and can do it. I just depends how much you want it and

perhaps if you happen to get the right "guidance" at the right time. You can call it "luck" if you want. That's

probably just semantics. Lucky enough to have the will to be healthy; lucky enough to believe in yourself; lucky

enough to believe in the power of your own thoughts and beliefs... You can call that "luck", but there is still

some very cool stuff buried away in there.

Thanks for that, Bruce. I

agree.

Btw, the materialistic sheen that made the movie so off-putting to you and me was all Rhonda Byrne.

She's a money-grubbing whore with intentions that extend far beyond "sharing 'the Secret' with the world." There

was some pretty ugly stuff going on with regard to the production of that film. Esther Hicks was completely

screwed.

Anyway, the movie presents a really dumbed-down, Oprahfied version of what seems to be a legitimate

concept. It's a shame, really.
